Overview
Mortuary Service Manager responsible for delivering safe, dignified, and efficient mortuary services within the NHS Trust. Manage day-to-day mortuary operations, ensure compliance with legislation, professional standards, and Trust policies. Lead a team, provide training and support, and liaise with clinical teams, bereavement services, coroners, funeral directors, and external agencies to ensure smooth processes and sensitive communication.
Main duties
The Mortuary Service Manager oversees the safe, respectful, and efficient operation of the hospital mortuary, ensuring compliance with legal, professional, and Trust requirements. Responsibilities include managing post-mortem arrangements, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring the facility, equipment, and processes meet high standards. Lead a team of mortuary staff, provide compassionate leadership, foster professional development, and uphold dignity in care for the deceased and their families. The role involves close liaison with pathologists, coroners, bereavement services, and external agencies, and contributing to service improvements while maintaining robust health, safety, and infection control practices.

Person Specification
Knowledge & Qualifications
* Hold Diploma in Anatomical Pathology from RIPHH.
* Demonstrate awareness of developments in the relevant specialty and the role within a Mortuary.
Experience
* At least 5 years post-qualification experience in a mortuary with proficiency in mortuary techniques.
* Experience of working as part of a team and training others in practical aspects of the work.
* Experience using a Laboratory Information System.
* Experience in staff supervision, management, appraisal, recruitment and selection.
* Experience in operating mortuary equipment according to manufacturers’ guidelines.
Skills & Abilities
* Excellent verbal and written communication in English; liaise with colleagues, bereaved relatives, and Funeral Directors professionally.
* Interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with empathy.
* Accuracy, attention to detail, and IT literacy (Microsoft Office and Trust IT systems).
* Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
