Associate Practitioner (Cellular Pathology)

The Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service (SHYPS) is seeking two enthusiastic Associate Practitioners to work in our busy, friendly Cellular Pathology laboratory.
These positions are temporary fixed term/secondment contracts for up to 12 months. You will be responsible for performing a wide range of scientific procedures and result interpretation on biological samples that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and the investigation of other pathological processes. We are looking for individuals with a good knowledge of Cellular Pathology.

The core hours are Monday to Friday 08:30am until 5:00pm.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for individuals who are hard‑working, innovative and work well as part of a team.
* To work in a consultant led team being responsible for performing a wide range of scientific procedures
* The postholder is a member of a team of laboratory staff that deliver a medical laboratory service to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care and resource management within the Trust; to maintain at all times the required high standards and quality
* The postholder will use individual judgment to make decisions that will have an impact on the end product in order to facilitate the provision of accurate and timely reports within available resources.
* The postholder will be expected to support and advise less experienced staff such as trainees, students as well as Medical Laboratory Assistants.

Person Specification
Skills and Attributes
* Close attention to detail able to work precisely and accurately
* Good communication skills – written and oral
* Able to demonstrate and use initiative appropriately
* Familiarity with hospital LIMS systems
* Experience of microtomy – able to produce tissue sections from embedded blocks
* Experience of embedding, morphological alignment of tissue within molten wax.
Education, Qualifications and Training
* GSCE grades A‑C or equivalent in Maths and English
* NVQ Level 3 in laboratory sciences or equivalent (e.g. IBMS Certificates of Achievement part 1 and 2 with lab experience) plus additional theoretical or applied training in specific discipline
Experience and Knowledge
* Previous experience in an NHS pathology laboratory
* Knowledge, competence and understanding of the role of Cellular Pathology in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
* Knowledge of health and safety
* Experience of working in an NHS Cellular Pathology laboratory
