Main duties of the job
We are looking to appoint dynamic and forward‑thinking Consultant Physicians with a special interest in Stroke Medicine to complete a team of six within the Trust covering North Cumbria. The Directorate would equally welcome applications from existing and newly trained Consultants on a full or part‑time basis.
Additional specialist interests in Elderly Care, Neurology, Pharmacology or Acute Medicine can be accommodated.
Appraisal and Job Planning is carried out at regular intervals and forwarded to the specialty lead.
Job responsibilities
One of the primary responsibilities is to deliver high quality stroke care across North Cumbria, providing 7‑day stroke/TIA clinics, and contributing to the development of stroke service pathways. Duties include assessment and management of acute stroke, coordination with acute and rehabilitation services, and ensuring integrated care pathways into community services.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Valid Full Registration with the General Medical Council
* Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via either Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), or European Community Rights.
* Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent.
Experience
* High level of clinical experience and competence in Stroke medicine.
* Business planning.
* Interest in developing links with Acute Medicine or Primary Care.
Research and Training Experience
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
* Experience of teaching to undergraduates and postgraduates.
* Commitment to continuing medical education, appraisal and clinical governance.
* Publications in peer reviewed journals.
* Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
* Teaching of non‑medical health professionals.
Skills
* Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff.
* Ability to organise workload efficiently.
* Empathetic and sensitive approach to patient needs.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Personal Circumstances
* Approachable and effective multidisciplinary team member with excellent/highly effective interpersonal skills.
* Ability to influence and negotiate.

Other
* Able to be based within 30 minutes of the base hospital or ability to travel to fulfil the requirements of the post.

Visa and Sponsorship
Applicants who require a Health and Care Visa or a Skilled Worker Visa must meet the UKVI salary threshold and occupation eligibility. The cost of DBS will be deducted from salary where applicable.

Disclosure and Barring Service check required (Rehabilitation of Offenders Act Exceptions Order 1975). DBS checks will be conducted with salary deduction.
