Job overview

We are looking to recruit nurses who have an interest in the care and experience of patients attending for ophthalmology surgery.

Experience in an Ophthalmic Unit is desirable. You must be motivated, enthusiastic, committed to delivering high standards of patient care with excellent communication skills.

We offer you an opportunity to join our friendly team, we will provide you with a full induction programme, individualised training will be given and you will be fully supported to gain ophthalmic knowledge and skills

You will work across the ophthalmic unit, covering a day case ward and potentially three outpatient clinics. The hours of work will be flexible between 07.00-19.00 Monday – Friday and 0830-1630 on Saturday. The post will initially be based at Chorley until required training has been completed but there will then be an expectation to work across site between Preston and Chorley.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework goals example: personal hygiene and comfort, vital signs and EWS, early recognition and management of acutely ill patients, safe transportation, last offices, fluid balance monitoring, ECG, wound dressings, removal of sutures/clips, venepuncture, cannulation, admission and discharge, care of IV infusion pumps, psychological and spiritual support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence based guidelines.
2. Support and provide patient education and health promotion
3. Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff
4. Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
5. Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
6. Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
7. Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice
8. Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

9. Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
10. Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
11. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
12. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures

Desirable criteria

13. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
14. Knowledge of Leadership and Management
15. Knowledge of ethical issues

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

16. Appropriate NMC Registration
17. Diploma in Nursing
18. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
19. Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses

Desirable criteria

20. Degree
21. ophthalmology qualification
