Job Title : General Services Team Leader Department Estates and Facilities Accommodation and Commercial Services Grade: Grade 5 Salary range: £27,319-£30,378 Working arrangements: Permanent Full time (35 hours per week, primarily Monday to Friday) There may be a requirement to work evenings and weekends as business demands Onsite working only Undertake an element of physical manual handling, which can include lifting and transporting tools, equipment and deliveries. The Role and Department As the General Services Team Leader, you will play a pivotal role in shaping a high-quality, customer-focused service that is efficient, cost-effective, and consistently exceeds expectations. You will lead the delivery of statutory compliance and service excellence, ensuring the University remains a safe, well-maintained, and welcoming environment for students, staff, visitors, and commercial partners alike. With direct responsibility for the day-to-day supervision of the General Services Assistants, you will inspire and guide your team to uphold the highest standards, fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement. The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses. Five GCSEs at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics 2. Professional craftsperson/practitioner with knowledge and expertise in buildings and estates, services, or relevant experience in a similar role. 3. Experience of working within a team to ensure the delivery of high-quality services. 4. Experience of contributing to the delivery of operational excellence within buildings and estate services, or similar professional area. 5. Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues. 6. Experience of managing time to meet deadlines. 7. Experience of supervising a team. Skills/Abilities/Knowledge 8. Excellent spoken and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally. 9. Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, business systems and project planning tools. 10. Knowledge of excellence in providing general services in portering, basic maintenance (DIY) or similar related area, for a large multi-site organisation. 11. Committed to continuing professional development. 12. Ability to solve problems yourself and as part of a team and plan appropriate solutions. 13. Knowledge of health and safety compliance. 14. Ability to participate in networks to share and discuss good practice and exchange information. Desirable Criteria 1. Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience. 2. Industry or professional knowledge/recognition relevant to the role supported by relevant courses or certification [for example]. 3. Experience of working in or with a higher education institution. 4. Full driving licence.
