Neonatal Dietetic Assistant

At present, University Hospitals of North Midlands is unable to offer visa sponsorship for Band 2 to Band 4 roles, as these positions do not meet the minimum salary and skill thresholds required under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations.

The successful applicant will support the delivery of the nutrition and dietetic service within a well‑established dietetic team which comprises of 65 dietitians and dietetic assistants in a wide range of dietetic services and specialties in one of the UK's largest Acute Hospital Trusts. The post holder will work in collaboration with a variety of the Neonatal MDT to support the delivery of dietetic care to patients in a busy acute environment. Best nutritional practice is embedded into the UHNM Quality Strategy.


Main duties of the job

To provide clinical and non‑clinical support to Neonatal Dietitians in a range of in‑patient acute settings and community locations including children’s outpatient areas & telephone reviews to support babies and families within the service.

The role works under the direction and supervision of qualified Dietitians in accordance with departmental protocols and clinical pathways to provide care and support for neonatal babies and their families.

The role is a key first point of contact for the Neonatal Dietetic Team and will support the team not only with clinical duties but with general administration duties and in the management of neonatal babies requiring Home Enteral Feeding.

Job responsibilities

* The role is a key first point of contact for the Neonatal Dietetic Team and will triage calls and emails to the Neonatal Dietetic Team, including recording details in the team’s message book and adding details to electronic patient records.
* Update electronic growth charts with anthropometric data from messages left by parents, carers and community staff.
* Supports Neonatal Dietitians with monitoring waiting lists (highlighting breaches to Clinical Lead) and managing short‑notice outpatient clinic appointment changes or rescheduling in response to clinic changes.
* To undertake ward‑based feeding observations at request of Neonatal Dietitian, using agreed templates to record information, collating information and reporting back to the Neonatal Dietitian for ongoing action.
* To support nursing and health‑care staff in weighing and lengthening babies as requested by Neonatal Dietitian.
* Registration of new patients and update of existing patients on the provider/contract system.
* Answering queries from patients, health‑care professionals and the Home Enteral Feeding provider relating to Home Enteral Feeding to ensure that patients receive a timely and appropriate service. This includes communication to GPs for urgent feed requests, sending feed plans to parents/carers and sending discharge handovers to relevant health‑care professionals while ensuring that actions are documented in patient clinical electronic records in accordance with departmental standards.


Person Specification


Essential Qualifications

* General standard of education to GCSE or equivalent. Grade C/ Level 4 or above in Maths, English and Science.
* Able to demonstrate good levels of literacy and numeracy.
* Interest in Nutrition.
* Minimum level of study BTEC/NVQ level 3 in a health/social care or science subject or demonstrates equivalent experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience

* Good IT skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and internet.
* Working with people face‑to‑face and over the telephone.
* Good time management and ability to work to deadlines.
* Previous experience of working within the NHS.
* Experience of working on a Neonatal Unit.
* Previous experience as a dietetic assistant.
* Previous experience working with children and/or babies.


Personal Qualities

* Respectful of patients and their needs, treating people with compassion and dignity.
* Ability to deal with difficult situations empathetically.
* Able to travel within local geographical area.
