Health Care Assistant - Respiratory
Position at NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.
Overview
Permanent, full‑time 37.5 hours a week. Band 3. Work on Ward 22, a 36‑bed respiratory ward providing care for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pleural effusions, bronchiectasis and other respiratory conditions.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of a registered nurse, you will support the ward/team in providing the highest standard of care for respiratory patients and their families/carers. You will undertake a range of tasks and duties as delegated by a registered nurse.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist patients with personal hygiene, toileting, grooming and mobility.
* Record fluid intake and output, dietary intake and provide meals, drinks and snacks.
* Support patients in managing incontinence and promote continence.
* Assist with pressure area care, wound assessment and dressing of non‑complex wounds.
* Carry out observations, including vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, peak flow and blood glucose monitoring.
* Support high‑flow oxygen therapy and non‑invasive ventilation.
* Assist with venepuncture, cannulation, catheterisation and nasogastric tube removal.
* Collect specimens for ward or laboratory testing; collect blood products from laboratory as requested.
* Prepare patients for treatments, investigations and procedures, and assist in recovery.
* Chaperone and escort patients to clinical departments and other hospitals for investigations.
* Assist registered nurses with clinical assessments and office duties.
* Maintain clinical records, ensuring documentation is countersigned by the responsible registered nurse.
* Provide basic life support techniques and assistance during prolonged resuscitation as directed.
* Develop effective communication within the multidisciplinary team; manage aggressive or abusive behaviour.
* Ensure the safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps in line with trust policy.
* Support the ward clerk with clerical duties, including reception, telephone, basic computer, filing and stock monitoring.
* Provide support and assistance to new and junior staff members.
Qualifications
* NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) – willingness to undertake if not already achieved.
Experience
* At least 18 months of healthcare experience, with NVQ level 2 or equivalent experience in a hospital setting.
Knowledge
* Reputation for high standard of patient care.
Skills
