Offer description

Attendance at local, regional, and national training courses will be encouraged. Study leave is granted in accordance with the national Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales).

Continuation of an applicant’s existing research, involvement in current departmental research, and development of new projects will be strongly encouraged.

Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, applicants are expected to observe the Trust’s policies and procedures on clinical matters, follow standing orders, and adhere to financial instructions.

Applicants must also observe local and national employment and personnel policies, and comply with Regional and Trust Health and Safety policies.

Key Responsibilities:

1. The main daytime clinical work involves theatre sessions—both accompanied and solo—with responsibility for patients. This may occur in elective, emergency, or trauma theatres. Trainees will have appropriate supervision by consultants.
2. A placement on the intensive care unit for 3 to 6 months may be expected.
3. The candidate will have opportunities to consolidate skills in obstetric anaesthesia.
4. On-call duties involve full shift rotas (EWTD compliant) for Emergency Theatre (1 in 7), ICU (1 in 6), and Obstetrics (1 in 8), integrating Anaesthetic trainees, clinical fellows, and Specialty Doctors. Rotation between these areas is expected, with possible predominance in one.
5. While this position does not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval for training recognition, it provides full teaching and training opportunities. A named educational supervisor will oversee development, career progression, and support during annual Trust appraisals.

Department Overview:

The Anaesthetics Department is part of the Division of Medicine, Diagnostics and Clinical Support, and the Division of Surgery and Women’s & Children’s Services. Responsibilities include Anaesthetic Services, High Dependency and Intensive Care, Pain Relief, Palliative Care, Operating Theatres, Recovery, and CSSD. The hospital also has an extra contractual Hyperbaric Chamber.

The department hosts an active teaching and research programme, with links to the University of East Anglia. On-site facilities include a purpose-built training and education centre, a refurbished library, and a learning café area.
