Job Summary
An excellent opportunity is available in North Devon for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our friendly and experienced adult mental health inpatient team. We are looking for a motivated, passionate occupational therapist who strives to have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of working‑aged adults with a mental health condition.
Location & Working Pattern
North Devon District Hospital, Raleigh Park, Barnstaple, Devon, EX31 4JB. Permanent, full‑time, flexible working.
Main Duties
The role is based on the 16‑bedded adult urgent care ward. You will work in a supportive environment focused on providing the best patient care in a locality with sea, moor, history and opportunity.
Responsibilities
* Assess and treat own specialist caseload of clients within identified settings.
* Act as clinical OT within the inpatient services, ensuring effective planning and delivery of the service and managing a small team.
* Provide supervision for OT staff on the ward to ensure a high standard of client care.
* Contribute to the development of high‑quality occupational therapy services through the professional clinical governance frameworks, including audit.
* Provide professional advice and expertise to the urgent inpatient management team.
Qualifications
* Diploma / Degree Occupational Therapy.
* Evidence of further training, with particular emphasis on mental health.
* Desirable: Short specialist courses equivalent to masters level.
Experience
* Substantive post‑graduate experience working in a range of mental health settings.
* Experience of supervising a range of people.
* Desirable: Experience of leading service development.
* Desirable: Experience of working in urgent/acute inpatient services.
Knowledge & Skills
* Evidence of ongoing professional development.
* Sound knowledge of current OT theory and practice.
* Highly developed communication / interpersonal skills, able to communicate clearly and confidently to a range of people.
* Excellent literacy and IT skills.
* Ability to present information logically and concisely both verbally and in writing.
* Ability to deal with complex and emotionally charged situations.
* Be flexible and adaptable to change, able to deal with unforeseen circumstances and remain calm under pressure.
