Senior Data Operations Engineer – Enterprise Risk Platform, Prudential & Analytics
Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire (Hybrid – at least two days per week in Leeds office). Salary: £70,929 – £78,810. Agile working options: Hybrid (40% office).
About the role
We’re at a pivotal stage of delivering on our strategy, becoming more proactive, nimble and efficient. The Prudential & Analytics Platform is key to creating this shift for the Group. This role sits within the Analytics Lab, a team building strategic data products and expanding data and analytics capability. We use agile delivery practices; self‑led employees who can accurately estimate and plan their own work are highly valued.
We are pioneering the transformation of current processes from on‑premises platforms and are deploying solutions on the Google Cloud Platform. You will support customers by ensuring the products we deliver are fit for purpose, meet quality and compliance standards, and evolve our data solutions.
What you'll get involved with
1. Data Platform Operations – Operate and support GCP‑based data platforms, particularly BigQuery environments; monitor performance, availability and cost efficiency; ensure high availability and resilience of data systems.
2. Pipeline Reliability & Support – Maintain and support ETL/ELT pipelines using Composer (Airflow) and dbt; ensure data quality, completeness and timeliness; implement proactive monitoring and alerting for pipeline failures.
3. Incident & Problem Management – Lead investigation and resolution of production data incidents; perform root cause analysis and implement preventative fixes; participate in on‑call rotations for critical systems.
4. Cloud & Infrastructure Engineering – Manage infrastructure using Terraform on GCP; support CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and Harness; work with Pub/Sub for event‑driven data processing.
5. Data Governance & Compliance – Ensure adherence to regulatory and internal data governance policies; implement data lineage, auditing and access controls; collaborate with risk, security and compliance teams.
6. Collaboration & Leadership – Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices; collaborate with data engineers, analysts and platform teams; contribute to architectural decisions and platform enhancements.
Key skills required
Technical Skills
* Strong SQL expertise and experience with BigQuery.
* Hands‑on experience with GCP services (BigQuery, Composer, Pub/Sub).
* Proficiency in Python and/or Java.
* Experience with dbt for transformation workflows.
* Familiarity with scheduling tools such as Tivoli.
DevOps & Infrastructure
* Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Harness).
* Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
* Version control using Git.
Operational Expertise
* Experience in data operations, production support or SRE environments.
* Strong troubleshooting and incident management skills.
* Monitoring and alerting implementation experience.
Domain Knowledge (Preferred)
* Experience in financial services or regulated environments.
* Understanding of data governance, risk and compliance frameworks.
Desirable skills
* Strong focus on reliability, automation and scalability.
* Experience operating mission‑critical data platforms.
* Ability to bridge engineering and operational support.
* Proactive mindset toward improving systems and processes.
