Heartlands, located in Birmingham, is a 100 MW simple cycle natural gas-fired power station powered by two Rolls-Royce Industrial Trent 50 gas turbines. The facility features GE Fanuc Cimplicity and Woodward Netcon 5000 controls and is preparing for a control system retrofit by transitioning to Allen Bradley controls to improve efficiency and performance. Opportunity Summary The Operations & Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring that plant operations are efficient and deliver optimum asset availability whilst complying with current UK health, safety, and environmental legislation. During plant operation, the O&M Technician will monitor and respond to any plant or equipment alarms, defects, or failures in an appropriate and timely manner. The use of the CMMS for reporting defects, planning routine or corrective maintenance, and co-ordinating work activities in line with safe systems of work is a key element of this role. The O&M Technician is also responsible for the day-to-day management of the site, including the planning and co-ordination of contractors undertaking maintenance activities or plant overhauls. This ensures that all work is carried out to the highest standards of safety, compliance, and operational performance. Perform O&M work as required including, but not limited to, the following: Operate the plant locally when required, ensuring continuous, efficient, and safe operation while maintaining optimum asset availability. Monitor all plant equipment before, during, and after operation, responding promptly to alarms, defects, or equipment failures in accordance with health, safety, environmental, and operational standards. Utilise the CMMS to report defects, record work requests, plan and schedule routine or corrective maintenance, track work progress, support stock control, and raise purchase requisitions. Carry out planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance on all equipment and systems, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with operational and regulatory requirements. Comply with the site’s safe system of work and lock-off/tag-out (LOTO) procedures, promoting a culture of safety in all activities. Plan, coordinate, and supervise all maintenance work carried out by third-party contractors, including plant overhauls, ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards. Provide operational and maintenance support at all fleet locations when requested. Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying operational or maintenance issues and implementing solutions to enhance plant performance, reliability, and compliance. Maintain and improve site housekeeping, ensuring work areas, equipment, and facilities are kept in an organised, safe, and compliant condition. Communicate effectively with operations, maintenance, and management teams to ensure co-ordinated execution of work activities and timely resolution of plant issues. Undertake any additional duties or responsibilities as required to support safe, efficient, and compliant plant operation. Working Relationships The O&M Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager/General Manager as directed and effectively collaborates with the field planner and colleagues. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 20 kg. The power station environment may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions. Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which may include hard hats, safety glasses and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict no-smoking policies apply in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All employees will be required to participate in the Fitness for Duty Programme. This includes a post-offer medical examination, drug screening, and ongoing random drug testing during employment. Work Schedule This position entails a regular work schedule of Monday to Friday during regular day shift hours, totalling 37 hours per week: 0800 – 1600 from Monday to Thursday, and 0800 – 1530 on Friday. Position may at times also require extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status may be required. Travel The role occasionally provides assistance to all fleet locations to ensure delivery of business objectives. Compensation This role offers an annual base salary of £49,000 to £53,000, plus a performance-related bonus. Essential Qualifications and Skills Relevant technical qualification, such as an NVQ, ONC, or HNC in an engineering discipline, providing a strong foundation in mechanical and electrical principles. Previous experience in mechanical maintenance and/or operations within a heavy process environment, ideally in power generation, with practical knowledge of plant systems. Experience managing third-party contractors, vendors, or service providers, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and to the required standards. Previous experience using CMMS systems for planning, reporting, and co-ordinating maintenance activities. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, to support reporting, documentation, and communication. Practical experience working with industry Safety Rules or lock-off/tag-out systems, ensuring compliance with operational safety procedures. Working knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation and regulations, supporting safe and compliant plant operations. Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and contribute effectively as part of a team. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and take initiative to resolve operational challenges. Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted United Kingdom driving licence, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
