Main duties of the job
As a key member of the Coagulation Laboratory based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and part of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP), the post holder will work closely with the Coagulation Laboratory Management team to provide operational, scientific, financial and workforce leadership for the Thrombosis (inherited and acquired thrombophilia).
* Provide expert scientific, operational and professional leadership for the local Thrombosis and TTP laboratory service.
* Manage day‑to‑day delivery, quality and governance of the Thrombosis and TTP analytical service.
* Lead service development and change, oversee analytical performance, quality management systems, accreditation and regulatory compliance.
* Collaborate with laboratory, clinical, network leads, contributing to strategic planning, service evaluation, audit, research and business development.
* Represent the service at local, regional and national forums and provide expert advice on complex analytical and interpretive issues.
* Work with equivalent Scientific Leads, the Coagulation Laboratory Manager, Blood Sciences Discipline Leads, the Haemophilia Centre Director, TTP Clinical Lead, other Clinical Leads and the Blood Sciences Deputy Clinical Director on SYBP strategy development and delivery.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* FIBMS (Blood Science) or MSc (Blood Science discipline or equivalent) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Blood Science) or Post Graduate Diploma or Demonstrable Experience.
* Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist.
Experience
* Extensive experience in Laboratory Thrombophilia assays including molecular genetic analysis.
* Extensive experience in Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) investigations and monitoring.
* Experience in other areas of coagulation testing including haemophilia diagnosis/treatment.
* Experience in leading service improvements.
* Experience in laboratory IT systems and departmental systems management.
* Experience in managing risk within a Pathology service.
* Experience in quality management systems and processes.
* Experience in service and policy development.
* Experience managing at a senior BMS level in coagulation – Blood Sciences department.
* Experience in budget management.
* Experience in routine Human Resource issues including engagement, communication, leadership and management.
* Experience in developing and delivering business plans and business development cases.
* Experience in superv[?] planning and execution of testing in commercial partnerships. Experience in data analysis, reporting and presenting of work performed as well as dissemination through abstracts, meetings and publications.
* Experience in the clinical governance agenda including clinical risk and safety.
* Experience in workforce planning and recruitment and retention strategies.
Skills
* Relevant and recent scientific knowledge appropriate to Coagulation – specifically thrombosis and TTP.
* Knowledge of the relevant standards, legislation, national and local policies and accreditation requirements relating to all aspects of service.
* Clear communication of complex, sensitive, contentious or emotive information to individuals or groups.
* Analytical and judgemental skills in evaluating complex issues including quality, service development, organisational and staffing issues.
* Excellent time management, ability to handle conflicting priorities under demanding timescales.

* Knowledge of health and safety and procedures for hazards, emergency situations and data protection.

£57,528 to £64,750 a year (pro rata for part time staff).
