Overview
Key job responsibilities DUTIES: The appointee will fulfil the duties with the agreed Job Plan. The appointee will be responsible for the management of ophthalmology emergency and elective patients admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, in collaboration with Consultant colleagues, providing a comprehensive elective and emergency ophthalmic service, and offering reciprocal cover during periods of leave. The appointee should devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post and prioritise these duties at all times. The duties are subject to review in light of changing service requirements, and any alterations will be mutually agreed between the appointee, consultant colleagues, and the Trust.
The appointee will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their charge and for the proper functioning of the department.
Responsibilities and duties by area
* Clinical – management of a full range of ophthalmology emergency and elective patients; provision of a comprehensive elective and emergency ophthalmic service; reciprocal cover for periods of leave.
* Governance and Audit – actively participate in clinical governance including clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Evidence-Based Practice; each directorate has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead.
* Teaching – play a significant role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; support undergraduate and junior doctor placements and training; contribute to CPD and teaching skill development.
* Research – engage with Trust and University research activities, align with the Trust research strategy and management framework; obtain approval from the R&I Department and relevant ethical approvals for research.
* Other Duties as Agreed – may take on other roles (e.g., Training Programme Director, Regional College Advisor, Royal College Representative) with prior discussion and agreement; job plan amendments may be undertaken as required.

Example Timetable – AM clinics (Face to Face/Virtual), PM clinics, and other duties as specified. Final activities will be agreed with the post holder prior to starting.

The department is introducing extended weekday working (7.00 am to 8.00 pm) including weekend work as part of the regular timetable, which the successful candidate is expected to support. Out-patient clinic bookings will be standardized for general and specialist clinics. Typical clinic rules are 4 new and 8 follow-ups for a 1 PA list for the consultant, with additional follow-ups for junior staff as agreed at the first formal job planning session. Clinics may be a mix of face-to-face and virtual reviews; flexibility within clinics and theatre sessions may be required based on service needs.
If weekend work is required, time off in lieu will be provided. Successful candidates are encouraged to take on Additional Programme Activities after settling into the post; this will be discussed at yearly job planning meetings.
