About the Ngaanyatjarra Council
Welcome to Ngaanyatjarra Lands, a vibrant tapestry of culture and community nestled within the vast beauty of the Australian desert. Home to approximately 2000 Yarnangu (Ngaanyatjarra people) across 11 unique communities, our council is dedicated to preserving and celebrating our rich heritage spanning over 10,000 years and 250,000 square kilometres.
Established in 1981, the Ngaanyatjarra Council Group (NCG) represents the interests of the Ngaanyatjarra People across the 11 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia. Employing in excess of 450 people, NCG provides a wide range of services, including health, utilities, construction, employment, community development, shops, roadhouses, art centres and land services. It is one of the largest and most successful Indigenous organisations in the country.
Our Vision
Representing the aspirations and interests of our diverse communities, we are dedicated to keeping Yarnangu strong on Country.
The Opportunity
As a FIFO Maternal and Women's Health Nurse, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, culturally responsive maternal and women’s health services across remote clinics where no permanent midwife is currently based. Working in close partnership with the Maternal & Women’s Health Coordinator and broader healthcare team, you will provide antenatal, postnatal, early childhood, and women’s health care grounded in best practice and guided by CARPA and the Women’s Business Manual.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Leading continuity of care for pregnant and post-partum women in collaboration with remote clinical teams and community members.
Supporting and promoting the active involvement of Aboriginal Health Workers in all aspects of care delivery.
Assisting in the planning and implementation of outreach programs such as breast screening, specialist visits, and child health checks.
Enhancing the skills of remote practitioners by offering clinical support, supervision, and on-site guidance.
Delivering individual and group education sessions for women and families focused on maternal, newborn, and early childhood health.
Contributing to data collection, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Maintaining strong inter-agency partnerships to support positive health outcomes for women and children.
Complying with all workplace health, safety, and infection control requirements.
About You
You are a qualified and experienced Midwife and General Nurse, registered with AHPRA, with a strong background in delivering comprehensive midwifery, child, and women’s health services—ideally supported by postgraduate qualifications in child health, women’s health, or remote practice. You thrive in remote and cross-cultural settings, bringing cultural sensitivity and a commitment to primary health care and community development principles.
Self-motivated and adaptable, you work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams, collaborating across professional and non-professional groups. You have well-developed skills in communication, conflict resolution, problem solving, and are confident delivering education and training to support and build the capacity of colleagues.
You are comfortable working in remote areas, including travelling by 4WD across the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, and are willing to work flexible hours when required. You demonstrate a strong commitment to quality improvement, are competent using clinical information systems and software, and hold a current manual driver’s licence. You either hold, or are eligible to obtain, a National Police Clearance and WA Working with Children Check. A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment would be highly regarded.
