The appointed Consultant will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services. They will be expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, and to follow the approved standing orders, financial instructions, and standards of conduct. Where they manage employees of the Trust, they will be expected to follow both national employment law and local personnel policies and procedures. They will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of patients and able to be contacted when on call. The post-holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff and will be required to devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, the post-holder will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers. The post-holder will also be expected to teach medical students and other healthcare professionals as required. A job plan review after commencement of post and no later than 3 months after start date will ensure that this activity is appropriately captured and remunerated (0.25 PA per supervising trainee and 0.125 PA for further trainees). It should be noted that the Terms and Conditions of Service for Consultants (England 2003) states that a consultant has continuing clinical responsibility for any patient admitted under his/her care. Office accommodation, secretarial support, and personal computer (including internet access) equipment will be provided.
