Job Description
Job Purpose
To provide technical support to the Translational Pharmacology & Immunology (TPI) Laboratory, a CRUK Biomarker Hub operating according to GCLP standards, to coordinate the processing, storage, and shipment of clinical samples derived from cancer patients enrolled in trials supported by CRUK and ECMC.
Responsibilities include collection & logging of samples, patient sample processing, management of sample storage and data logs, sample analysis, and other related activities as required, within the TPI Laboratory and according to GCLP standards, under the supervision of Professor Maria Libera Ascierto, Head of the TPI Laboratory.
The post is based at the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre, on the UoG Garscube Campus.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
1. Participate in GCLP and GCP training, with an understanding of University of Glasgow regulations and procedures.
2. Arrange transport of biological specimens from the Clinical Research Unit (CRU), Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre (BWoSCC). Handle patient samples according to GCP and GCLP standards.
3. Process and log biological specimens according to GCLP standards. Analyze biological samples as required.
4. Organize sample shipment to/from the TPI and Clinical Research Unit, BWoSCC, and other sites within Glasgow/UK, maintaining sample tracking logs to ensure sample integrity, following GCLP standards.
5. Assist with development, maintenance, and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the TPI Laboratory, covering all aspects of sample handling, recording, shipment, and processing according to GCLP standards.
6. Plan and organize daily work to ensure experimental goals are met within the timetable.
7. Contribute to the safe and organized functioning of the laboratory, assist with purchasing consumables and supplies needed for sample processing and other research activities within TPI.
8. Develop, create, and test new equipment, systems, procedures, protocols, models, and techniques related to sample storage and analysis. Diagnose faults and troubleshoot day-to-day problems, carrying out maintenance as required.
9. Work with Clinician Units to provide advice, analyze data, and diagnose related to sample processing. Contribute to study reports as necessary.
10. Monitor technical standards with senior staff, advise, implement, and evaluate improvements to protocols.
11. Collect, analyze, and interpret data using standard procedures, ensuring accurate records and updated databases. Present findings clearly, including research or teaching data.
12. Maintain stock levels, prepare specialized media/reagents, and purchase consumables within budget.
13. Ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the workspace, implement health and safety policies, and support risk assessments.
14. Supervise staff where relevant, including allocating work and monitoring progress.
15. Collaborate with colleagues, participate in meetings, and contribute to wider activities, including the Technician Commitment.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
* A1: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 or equivalent, with experience in a similar role.
* A2: Knowledge of GCLP principles and health & safety legislation.
* A3: Technical knowledge related to clinical sample processing, records, storage, and QC according to GCLP standards (e.g., Q-Pulse, Mosaic).
* A4: Knowledge of biochemical & molecular biology methods relevant to the discipline.
Desirable
* B1: First degree in relevant cancer sciences discipline.
* B2: Knowledge of translational cancer research themes and analytical methodologies for human/clinical samples.

* C1: Proficient IT skills, including database and spreadsheet software.
* C2: Skills in handling clinical samples according to GCLP standards, with software proficiency.

Terms and Conditions
Salary: Grade 5, £26,338 - £30,805 per annum.
This is a full-time (35 hours/week), fixed-term position to cover up to 12 months or until the substantive post holder returns.
