An opportunity has arisen for a ward manager post on Rowan Ward at Royal Oldham Hospital. Rowan is a 12‑bedded ward for males with a functional illness, primarily serving people over 65 years old, who often experience challenging behavioural and psychological symptoms.
Responsibilities
* Management of the clinical team: ensuring the team works effectively both as individuals and as a collective, including recruitment, retention, development, support and performance management of staff.
* Management of the Service User Experience: acting as the clinical lead for the unit, leading the multidisciplinary team, ensuring responsiveness to service‑user needs and maintaining robust clinical documentation.
* Management of local Governance Processes: auditing and evaluating services as required by Trust and Directorate policies, reporting to Governance and Clinical Business Unit meetings and the Clinical Services Manager.
* Provide effective clinical leadership and manage ward staff.
* Maintain personal contact with patients, their relatives and carers, respecting their needs for respect, privacy and dignity and acting as the senior point of contact on the ward.
* Lead on the formulation of staff rotas to ensure efficient use of manpower and resources in relation to service‑user need and ward activity.
* Lead on monitoring all staff sickness in accordance with Trust policies.
* Ensure all staff follow guidelines identified in Trust and National policies.
* Participate in the investigation of patient complaints per Trust procedures, aiming to resolve complaints at ward level and communicating with the Service Manager when necessary.
* Take responsibility for own personal development and support junior staff’s training and educational objectives.
* Take responsibility for own clinical and managerial development in support of the Service Manager.
* Participate in the annual individual performance review/yearly conversation of all ward staff and assist in formulation of personal development plans aligned with ward aims.
* Ensure all staff receive education and training in accordance with PREP and Scope of Professional Practice.
* Ensure all newly qualified staff receive ongoing support through preceptorship.
* Ensure all learner nurses have access to a designated assessor.
* Act as a mentor for learner nurses.
Recruitment and Selection Responsibilities
* Coordinate and participate in recruitment and selection of staff as required.
* Participate in employment interviews for staff vacancies, Bands 2 to 6.
* Ensure newly appointed staff are introduced to the ward environment and receive orientation and support to meet their needs.
General Duties of all post holders
* Undertake any reasonable duty appropriate to the band when requested by senior staff.
* Be familiar with and comply with all Trust and departmental policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.
* Be aware of and work towards the Trust’s strategic goals.
