Course Summary
This course will give you an advanced insight into how our body responds to exercise looking at the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, energy systems, skeletal system and muscular system. You will develop an understanding of people from different backgrounds, religions and cultures considering what barriers impact their ability to meet World Health Organisation recommendations for physical activity and developing action plans to support them. You will have an opportunity to apply your knowledge to sporting environments and develop your skills as a Sports Leader within the sports industry.
This course gives you a blend of practical performance, independent coursework and external examinations. All other units are assessed internally and then moderated by the exam board. The opportunity to gain practical experience in the Sports Industry (Unit 3) gives students a chance to build connections and develop their skills in the professional environment, experience that will support them in future career choices and applications to higher education.
Course Details
Students will study 4x units, 3x of which are mandatory:
1. Anatomy and Physiology (120 Guided Learning Hours)
2. Fitness Training and Programming for Health Sport and Well-being (120 Guided Learning Hours)
3. Professional Development in the Sports Industry (60 Guided Learning Hours)
1x unit will be studied from the following (each worth 60 guided learning hours):
1. Sports Leadership
2. Application of Fitness Testing
3. Sports Psychology
4. Practical Sports Performance
How will it be delivered and assessed?
2x units are assessed via an external exam:
1. Anatomy and Physiology – 1 hour 30 minutes exam.
2. Fitness Training and Programming for Health Sport and Well-being – 2 hours 30 minutes exam.
All other units are assessed internally and then moderated by the exam board. This internal assessment will be via written coursework, video evidence, witness statements and logbooks.
This course is an A Level equivalent qualification graded at Pass through to Distinction*.Mandatory content (83%)
External assessment (67%)
Entry requirements
Students should have studied Physical Education and / or Sport Studies at GCSE, achieving at least a Grade 4 (or equivalent).
Grades in Science will be reviewed, due to the Scientific content of the Anatomy and Physiology units. Again, a Grade 4 in Science will be required.
For those who have not studied Physical Education and / or Sports Studies at GCSE, may be considered providing you have a keen interest in physical activity and a Grade 4 in Science GCSE.
