Medical Secretary - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for a highly motivated and well‑organised individual to join the team of Medical Secretaries within Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Scarborough Hospital.
This varied secretarial role supports Consultant Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and their teams with communication, administrative and secretarial tasks, assists patients with queries, and engages with the wider clinical team and other stakeholders such as GPs.
Responsibilities
The main duties include:
* Typing of clinics and general correspondence
* Complex diary management and provision of patient data
* Dealing with correspondence from patients, GPs and other sources, including scheduling of appointments to ensure referral to treatment targets are met
* Responding to queries in a timely manner to maintain a responsive service
Person Specification
* Excellent communication skills
* Minimum two years recent secretarial/admin experience
* Proficient typing skills, especially audio‑typing and digital dictation
* Knowledge of medical terminology (advantageous)
* Well‑organised, able to prioritise workload in a fast‑paced environment, work independently to meet strict deadlines
* Efficient and resilient team player, upholds Trust Values, flexible and willing to learn
Qualifications
* GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
* ECDL
Experience
* Minimum 2 years secretarial/administrative experience
* Experience using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
* NHS Experience
Skills
* Ability to communicate with upset or angry people and deal with situations effectively
* Proficient audio typist capable of accurately transcribing complex digital dictation and typing complex medical information despite frequent interruption
* Ability to explain complex information to staff, patients and others as required
* Adaptable and flexible to new demands
Knowledge
* Thorough knowledge of medical terminology
