About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated individual with a strong scientific or engineering background and excellent problem-solving skills to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will engage in diverse projects involving the design, evaluation, simulation, and implementation of advanced laser technology and other technological systems. This role provides an exceptional opportunity to work on cutting-edge challenges in the exciting and attractive field of lasers, offering substantial professional growth and a stimulating environment.

Key Responsibilities:

* Identify, analyze, and resolve complex technical problems through analytical thinking, simulation, and practical implementation
* Design, develop, and optimize advanced laser-based hardware and software solutions tailored to specific project requirements
* Commission advanced laser and technological systems, including installation, calibration, data acquisition, and performance optimization
* Develop diagnostic tools and methodologies to assess laser system performance and enhance operational effectiveness
* Employ computational tools and software such as MATLAB, Python, or equivalent platforms for simulation and design validation
* Clearly document technical progress and outcomes through detailed reports, technical manuals, and presentations
* Operate and maintain advanced laser equipment, as well as technical and scientific instrumentation, including oscilloscopes, spectrometers, cameras, sensors, and data acquisition systems

Person Specification

The below criteria will be scored during Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I).

Essential:

* Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S)
* Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S)
* Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
* Able to commence employment in summer 2026 (S)
* Minimum of two years of degree course in physics, or a closely related subject, with grades corresponding to a 2:1 or higher (S)
* A-level Maths or equivalent (S)
* A-level Physics or equivalent (S)
* Demonstrable ability in problem-solving and analytical reasoning (I)
* Evidence of ab initio reasoning through problems (I)

Desirable:

* Knowledge of basic optics (S&I)
* Experimental physics laboratory course (S&I)
* Knowledge of one programming language (e.g. Visual Basic, C++, MATLAB) (S&I)
* Knowledge of laser/optical theory (S&I)
* Further Maths (S&I)
Physics knowledge (S&I)
