Job overview

The North London NHS Foundation Trust seeks to appoint an enthusiastic, part-time old age consultant psychiatrist to the Enfield Older Adult Services, working in the newly established older people’s home treatment team covering the northern boroughs of the Trust (Barnet, Enfield and Haringey). This is an exciting opportunity to develop a new service from scratch and the opportunity has come about as a result of the organisation’s older adult community transformation work.


Main duties of the job

General Expectations of a Consultant Psychiatrist employed with North London NHS Foundation Trust include

* To work within the MDT promoting respect for all professional groups and focusing upon coherent and integrated teamwork.
* To be Section 12(2) approved and have approved clinician status and participate in the Trust-wide Section 12 daytime rota.
* To provide second opinions for consultant colleagues if requested.
* To keep up with administration and note-keeping on the electronic patient record system in a timely manner, including letters to GPs, Dialog+ and risk assessments.
* To assist with Serious Incident investigations and complaints if requested.
* To keep up to date with mandatory training.
* To attend and participate in Consultants' and Management meetings to keep informed of service issues and developments.
* Other management/clinical supporting activity (to be negotiated as required by the Trust.)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties of post holder: The post holder will be expected to provide clinical leadership for the older adults home treatment team. The post-holder will be expected:

* To manage patients old age patients with a variety of diagnoses including psychotic and non-psychotic illness who are presenting in crisis.
* To provide clinical leadership for the team, having oversight of the caseload and directing clinical assessments and consultations for patients.
* Medical input and leadership in daily MDT referral/allocation/team meetings.
* To conduct assessments, provide psychologically informed formulations and undertake risk assessments.
* To formulate treatment plans and oversee implementation and evaluation of these treatment plans.
* To contribute to management of patient flow with a view to manage bed capacity effectively and facilitate prompt discharge of clinically ready for discharge acute psychiatric inpatients.
* To comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, safeguarding procedures.
* To complete relevant paperwork, including maintaining the electronic record and participating in routine outcome monitoring of clinical work.
* To teach and supervise medical staff and other professionals in all aspects of psychiatric care.
* To participate in the trust-wide day-time consultant psychiatrist second on-call Rota for Health Based Place of Safety situated at Chase Farm Hospital (1:32) and the trust wide on call rota.
* To participate in stakeholder meetings and other duties, as negotiated, that contribute to the good functioning of the clinical team.
* To provide clinical and professional leadership within the post and take part in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service within which it is embedded.
* As a senior clinician, to have an integral role in the performance of the team, further development of the service, and the development of the clinical pathways and priorities of the service.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Qualifications or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
* Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date
* Included on the GMC LD Specialist Register OR within six months
* Approved clinician
* Section 12 Approval
* In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
* Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative


Clinical skills, knowledge and experience

* Excellent knowledge in specialty
* Excellent clinical skills using biopsycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
* Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
* Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
* Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
* Wide range of specialist and subspecialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service


Academic Skills and lifelong learning

* Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
* Ability to work in and lead team
* Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to deliver improvement.
* Participated in research or service evaluation.
* Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
* Reflect on purpose of CPD undertaken
* Experienced in clinical research and/or service evaluation
* Evidence of achievement in education, research, and audit
