Job Description
Structural Integrity Engineer (FEA) - Submarines
Full Time, 5 Days On-Site, Derby
We have an interesting opportunity for two Structural Integrity Engineers to join our new office opening in Cardiff. As a structural integrity engineer, you will primarily engage in structural integrity assessments including primary strength, fatigue, fatigue crack growth, and fracture assessments, in accordance with ASME III and R6 defect tolerance assessment code. You will support a wide range of programmes from in-service support, new build, and future projects. You will also build and maintain Finite Element Analyses (FEA) models to extract stresses for component justification.
Why Rolls-Royce?
Our Submarines business is expanding, opening a new office in Cardiff, and seeking engineers across multiple disciplines, especially those with a strong background in Materials Engineering. As part of our support to the Royal Navy as the technical authority to the UK Ministry of Defence for naval reactor plants, we are growing our submarine and nuclear sector capabilities.
Join us for an environment that values authenticity, inclusivity, continuous learning, and a broad range of growth opportunities. We offer excellent development, a competitive salary, and benefits including bonuses, employee support, and discounts.
The work is diverse and impactful; you will respond rapidly to challenges, providing vital services to the Submarines enterprise.
What you will be doing:
1. Undertaking mechanical assessments, including linear and non-linear finite element analyses.
2. Using traditional hand calculations, commercial finite element codes (mainly Abaqus), and bespoke analysis tools.
3. Developing and supporting component designs, informing through-life management, and supporting submarine enterprise development.
4. Developing methodologies for assessing submarine nuclear plant components.
5. Communicating assessment outcomes clearly to various audiences within Rolls-Royce, industry partners, and clients.
Who we are looking for:
At Rolls-Royce, we value agility, boldness, collaboration, and simplicity. We seek candidates who embody these principles.
Essential:
* Degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, physics, or mathematics.
* Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects.
* Interest and expertise in structural integrity analysis.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of failure mechanisms and assessment methods.
* Experience with finite element methods (preferably Abaqus).
* Support experience to manufacturing engineers, designers, and safety case writers.
* Knowledge of linear and non-linear events.
* Experience with industry-standard FEA tools like Abaqus, ANSYS, HyperMesh.
* Experience working in safety-critical industries and understanding safety case and design code requirements (ASME III, R6).
* Membership or Associate Membership of a relevant professional institution, working towards chartership.
We are an equal opportunities employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We support your development and respect all backgrounds. To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines, you need to hold a UK Security Check (SC) clearance, which we will support if needed. Due to the nature of our work, additional background checks may be required.
