This position is a temporary contract ending 31‑March‑2027.
The role enables the Trust to provide cardiac physiology investigations, including at an external site at West Swindon, with staff rotation into the department at the hospital. The department undertakes a wide range of invasive and non‑invasive investigations such as stress echocardiography, TOE, physiology‑led valve and bubble clinics. We carry out CRT, ICD and conduction‑system device implantations and follow‑up, maintain a remote monitoring pacemaker service, and conduct research in echocardiography and pacing.
The post holder will independently perform, interpret and report on a range of investigations and support service development.
Main duties of the job
* Work in close partnership with the Cardiac Physiology Service Managers, other cardiac physiologists, and lead clinicians on a day‑to‑day basis.
* Help develop and facilitate the implementation of standard operating procedures and guidelines within the department to support effective service delivery.
* Help undertake regular review of these guidelines and update them in line with current research and national/local guidelines.
* Remain current in best‑practice guidelines within cardiac physiology and use this information to support service development.
* Maintain extensive knowledge and expertise in cardiac physiology.
* Depending on experience, undertake, interpret and report on advanced cardiac diagnostic tests, such as cardiac ultrasound and cardiac rhythm management devices to advise patients, clinicians, and specialists.
* Train, develop and assess junior staff members, ensuring skill maintenance and service delivery requirements are met.
Detailed responsibilities
* Actively participate in the preparation, delivery, and evaluation of information and educational resources for all levels of medical and nursing staff, aiming to improve understanding of advantages and limitations of investigations and therapy.
* Participate in audit by implementing, monitoring and collating research and audit data as required by an agreed audit framework.
* Provide clinical supervision and training where appropriate, acting as a work‑based assessor for a specific area of cardiac physiology.
* Work in close partnership with the Cardiac Physiology Service Managers, other cardiac physiologists, and lead clinicians on a day‑to‑day basis.
Qualifications
* BSc Honours Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent.
* Ability to demonstrate ongoing professional development and up‑to‑date clinical practice.
* Current post‑graduate professional qualification: BSE accreditation and/or Cardiac Rhythm Management.
* Ability to work independently in areas of cardiac physiology beyond main interest, e.g., perform and/or assist in DSE, ESE, TOE; perform and report 3D echo and congenital heart disease scans; work in CRM or cardiac catheter laboratory services.
* Teaching and assessor qualification.
* Second professional post‑graduate qualification.
* Adult BSE accreditation.
* Ability to perform and report on echocardiograms and/or cardiac rhythm management.
