We are a well-established mechanical engineering business operating across the UK, delivering complex engineering solutions into heavy industrial sectors including oil & gas, petrochemical, cement, and Steel making.
Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of work, we are seeking an experienced Sales Manager / Estimator to join our sales team and support project delivery from initial enquiry through to contract award.
The Role
This is a key commercial position combining technical sales, estimating, and client relationship management. You will play a pivotal role in securing new business, preparing competitive tenders, and ensuring commercially sound project delivery.
The role sits at the front end of the business, translating client requirements, specifications, and site conditions into accurate and profitable proposals.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Business Development
* Develop and manage relationships with key clients
* Identify and convert new business opportunities through proactive engagement
* Manage and maintain a strong sales pipeline and forecasting activity
* Lead client meetings, site visits, and technical discussions
* Review engineering drawings, specifications, and enquiry documents to produce accurate cost estimates
* Prepare detailed quotations, tenders, and commercial proposals
* Build cost models covering labour, materials, subcontractors, plant, and logistics
* Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing
* Identify both commercial and operational risks.
Commercial & Project Interface
* Work closely with workshop and operations teams to validate costings and delivery methods
* Support contract negotiations and handover to operations team
* Monitor tender outcomes and refine pricing strategies
* Ensure compliance with HSE, quality, and client standards
Candidate Requirements
* Proven experience in a Sales, Estimator, or Sales Engineer role within mechanical or heavy engineering
* Strong understanding of industrial environments (e.g. oil & gas, petrochemical, cement, fabrication, pipework)
* Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
* Demonstrable experience preparing tenders and cost estimates
* Strong commercial awareness and negotiation skills
* Excellent communication and client-facing ability
* HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
* Experience with fabrication, pipework, shutdowns, or maintenance projects
* Experience managing key accounts or leading sales activities
