Job Description

Eden Scott is delighted to be supporting our longstanding Legal Practice client with the search for a Law Accountant to join their well established team.

They are a client-focused firm of solicitors based in Aberdeen, offering legal services to individuals, families, and businesses throughout the North-East. Due to continued growth in their Private Client department, they are seeking an experienced Law Accountant, ideally with specialist knowledge in executries to join their team.

THE ROLE

As their in-house Law Accountant, you will play a crucial role in managing the financial administration of executry (probate) estates. Working closely with solicitors and executry paralegals, you will be responsible for preparing estate accounts, ensuring compliance with legal and tax obligations, and supporting the smooth and timely administration of estates.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare detailed and accurate executry accounts in accordance with legal requirements and Law Society of Scotland guidelines

Calculate and report inheritance tax (IHT) and capital gains tax (CGT) as required

Liaise with HMRC and financial institutions regarding tax matters and valuations

Draft estate income and expenditure statements, asset schedules, and distribution calculations

Assist solicitors with estate planning, valuations, and winding up procedures

Identify and advise on discrepancies or compliance issues within estate accounts

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of taxation, trusts, and executry law relevant to accounting practice

Support audit or inspection processes where necessary

Ensure deadlines are met efficiently while maintaining the highest standard of accuracy

REQUIREMENTS

Qualified or part-qualified Law Accountant or QBE with relevant executry experience

A minimum of 2 years' experience working with executries or private client accounting

Proficient in preparing final accounts and understanding estate taxation

Working knowledge of HMRC systems

Strong attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion

Excellent organisational, numerical, and communication skills

Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload

DESIRABLE

Experience working within a Scottish legal firm

Familiarity with Trust accounts and Guardianships

Knowledge of the Law Society of Scotland Accounts Rules
