Consultant Haematologist

Applicationsare invited for the post of Consultant Haematologist. The South of TyneHaematology team are a friendly, forward-thinking team who aim to run a well-designed servicethat provides high quality care for people living with haematologicalconditions.

Our team comprises 7 Consultantsemployed by SouthTyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) and an 8th Consultant employed by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital(QEH) in Gateshead.

In-patientwork at Sunderland Royal Hospital (SRH) includes the delivery of acuteleukaemia induction and managing patients undergoing autologous stem celltransplantation. We provide non-malignant paediatric Haematology clinics and a Teenage& Young Adult (TYA) service for malignant disorders, working closely withthe regional centre in Newcastle.

Weare looking for a colleague who shares our enthusiasm for Haematologyexcellence. Specialist interests in research, Haemato-Oncology,paediatric Haematology/TYA, transfusion, laboratory reporting, haemostasis andthrombosis and medical education are welcomed.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be based at SRH with some sessions at South Tyneside Hospital (STDH). The role includes:

* 1 in 7 attending week on-call managing the Haematology in-patients at SRH and 2 week wait referrals, liaison work and laboratory reporting
* Once weekly non-resident overnight on-call
* 2 adult Haematology clinics per week during non-attending weeks across both sites clinics have a mix of haemato-oncology, haemostasis and thrombosis and general haematology patients
* Review of patients on the day units at SRH and STDH
* In-patient and out-patient chemotherapy prescribing
* Advice and Guidance to GPs
* 1 in 3 ward round of Haematology patients admitted to STDH under Medicine (face-to-face and remote reviews)
* Laboratory reporting of bone marrow biopsies
* Attendance at the weekly Consultant Grand Round on B28
* Attendance at the weekly MDT & involvement in the bone marrow morphology MDT on a rotating basis

Although the post is a full-time post, applicants who wish to work less than full-time are encouraged to apply.

The post holder should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and be on the GMC Full Specialist Register with a License to Practice. Job responsibilities

The post holder will be a member ofthe Medical Specialities Directorate in STSFT and will be part of theConsultant team that will deliver clinical and laboratory Haematology servicesacross Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead. In conjunction with the otherHaematologists, the post holder will contribute to the overall organisation andplanning of the service. They will be responsible for providing an out-patientservice, including the monitoring of chemotherapy. As part of their on-callcommitments, the post holder will be responsible for Haematology in-patients atSRH, providing Haematology advice to GPs south of Tyne & Wear and hospitalspecialities on all 3 sites and will undertake blood film reporting for all 3sites.

The post holder is expected topossess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and Fellowship ofthe Royal College of Pathologists (UK) or equivalent qualifications. The post holder is expected to be on the GMC FullSpecialist Register with a License to Practice (or be eligible for registrationwithin 6 months of interview). If UK-trained, the post holder must be a holderof a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within 6 months of awardof CCT by the date of interview.

The post holder will be expected tocontribute to the development of clinical and laboratory Haematology servicesacross all 3 sites and to attend appropriate meetings depending onsub-specialist interests, in order to further the development of the service.

Personal Attributes

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and healthcare workers and other agencies.
* Evidence of understanding of and adherence to principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the GMC.
* Have experience in the development of a clinical service provision.


Management and Administrative Experience

* Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues.
* Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills.
* Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals.
* Management course and / or certificate.


Teaching and Education

* Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
* Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
* Qualification in medical education.


Audit and Research

* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
* Involvement in quality improvement measures.
* Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in speciality area.
* Experience of clinical research.
* Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals.


Qualifications

* Primary medical qualification.
* Full GMC registration.
* Hold MRCP and FRCPath (Haem) qualifications or equivalent.
* Have been involved in academic research as part of their training and have both presented and published peer reviewed articles.


Clinical Experience

* Full and Specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
* Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview.
* Experience in routine laboratory Haematology including regular reporting of blood films, bone marrow biopsies, advising on coagulation problems and transfusion issues.
* Experience with and training in induction therapy for acute leukaemia.
* Have experience in the development of a multidisciplinary group for clinical service provision.
* Experience with and training in autologous stem cell rescue.
* Competence to administer intrathecal chemotherapy.
