A specialist school in East Sussex is seeking a dedicated English and Literacy Teacher to deliver differentiated, dyslexia-friendly English lessons to students from Year 7 to Sixth Form.

Your New Role
As an English and Literacy Teacher, you’ll play a crucial role in developing students’ literacy, language, and confidence. You will use specialist strategies to support reading, writing, phonics, vocabulary development, andprehension, ensuring high-quality teaching that truly meets students’ needs. Your responsibilities will include:
1. Planning and delivering engaging, well-structured English and literacy lessons tailored to learners with dyslexia and related needs
2. Designing and adapting teaching materials to ensure accessibility and appropriate challenge for all ability levels
3. Teaching phonics, early literacy skills, and structured reading/spelling interventions
4. Integrating assistive technologies, such as text-to-speech tools and word processors
5. Providing targeted one-to-one and small-group literacy support
6. Monitoring progress through regular assessment and using data to inform future teaching
7. Maintaining accurate records and ensuring that individual support plans are followed
8. Working closely with the learning support team, teaching assistants, and colleagues across the school
9. Contributing to curriculum development, schemes of work, marking policies, and whole-school literacy strategy
10. Encouraging independence, resilience, and positive attitudes to reading and writing
11. Acting as a Form Tutor and supporting the pastoral care of your tutor group
12. Participating fully in the wider life of a boarding school, including duties and extra-curricular activities
This role is ideal for a patient, creative, and passionate teacher who wants to make literacy accessible, meaningful, and enjoyable for students with diverse learning needs.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
13. A degree in English or a related field, plus QTS
14. Experience teaching English, ideally up to Key Stage 4
15. Strong understanding of literacy development, including phonics, vocabulary, and structured writing skills
16. Experience working with learners with dyslexia or specific learning difficulties, or a willingness to undertake specialist training
17. Ability to create a supportive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment
18. Excellentmunication skills and the ability to explain ideas clearly and accessibly
19. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to differentiate effectively and manage individual learning programmes
20. Empathy, patience, and a student-centred approach
21. A flexible, proactive approach and the ability to work well within a collaborative team
