As a Data Engineer, you’ll work alongside curious, energetic and focused people. You are responsible for delivering our vision to create a fully integrated, scalable, high‑performance and compliant data platform and pipelines. You’ll help roadmap and deliver replacements for the current ad‑hoc data solutions with strong foundations built on modern technologies and practices that will make it easy to produce large quantities of high quality data for consumption and analysis. You are expected to actively contribute to team discussion, share opinions and align behind decisions as if they were your own.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
* Iteratively develop next‑generation scalable, reliable, flexible, high‑performance data pipeline capabilities and data platforms.
* Use standardised tooling and procedures to work with business users to model and implement data pipelines that are performant, scalable, reliable, secure, well‑governed with required observability.
* Engage with other teams as needed to achieve business objectives.
* Own end‑to‑end data quality in our core datasets and data pipelines.
* Help teams identify and resolve data quality issues.
* Maintain data quality, security, integrity and governance by following regulatory requirements, company standards and best practices.
* Adhere to defined principles for architecture, quality and non‑functional requirements.
* Mentor and onboard new team members to help them grow professionally.
* Continuously improve services you own, making them more performant and optimised.
* Ensure products and services are always kept up to date with the latest technology standards and company guidelines.
* Ensure service level agreements are met by implementing tests and processes.
* Perform profiling to find bottlenecks and optimise performance, and set up and monitor performance metrics for product health.
* Connect business and product goals to complex technical tasks.
* Prioritise issues, perform root‑cause analysis and prevent recurrence.
* Contribute to Booking.com’s growth through interviewing, onboarding and other recruitment efforts.
* Work in an agile environment and contribute towards the team's ways of working.
* Provide out‑of‑hours support on a rota.
Qualifications & Skills
* Appropriate degree or suitable background and experience in technology.
* 3+ years of experience designing, building and optimising data warehouses in databases such as MSSQL (with SSIS), MySQL or Redshift.
* 1+ years of experience in a scripting language like Python or Scala.
* Experience in data modelling.
* Self‑motivated to explore new technologies.
* Excellent communication skills – able to effectively communicate with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Excellent attention to detail.
* Self‑starter and highly motivated team player.
* Root‑cause analysis mindset to problem and issue resolution.
* Fully comfortable working in English, both written and spoken.
Bonus Points For
* Experience with Python, Airflow, Snowflake, DBT, pySpark.
* Experience working in a Data Governance L3 environment.
* Experience with Data Vault modelling.
* Experience with AWS.
* Passionate about test automation.
