Overview

Clinical Podiatrist – Band 6 (or Band 5/6 Development post). The closing date is 07 May 2026.

Develop your high-risk foot skills within a supportive, expert team. Develop or consolidate your skills in the management of the at-risk and diabetic foot, working alongside a supportive team of experienced podiatrists and non-medical prescribers in a well-established service. The Hillingdon Podiatry Service manages a large and complex high-risk foot caseload across the borough and is the main podiatry provider to the Multidisciplinary Foot Team based at Hillingdon Hospital.

We are recruiting to a Band 6 Clinical Podiatrist post; however, we actively welcome applications from newly qualified podiatrists or those seeking to progress from Band 5 to Band 6 through a supported development pathway.

Band 5-6 Development Pathway for newly qualified Podiatrists. This post is offered as a 12-month fixed team development role with a structured Band 5-6 progression pathway designed to build confidence, autonomy and clinical competence within a safe and supportive community setting. On satisfactory completion of the agreed competencies, the post holder will be promoted to permanent Band 6. The expected timeframe for progression is 12 months, depending on prior knowledge and experience. If competencies are not achieved within the agreed timeframe, the post holder's role will come to an end at the 12-month period.


Main duties of the job

* Assessing, diagnosing and managing patients with complex podiatric needs
* Developing and implementing individualised care plans
* Providing specialist care for patients with:
o Diabetes and high-risk foot conditions
o Peripheral vascular disease
o Rheumatological conditions
o Acute and chronic neuropathies
o Wound management
o Biomechanical problems
* Planning and managing your own caseload in line with agreed clinical pathways
* Signposting and referring patients appropriately within the multidisciplinary team

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To be responsible/accountable for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of podiatric care to a variety of patients with a wide range of clinical needs
2. This includes: patients with medical conditions that affect the feet such as Diabetes at different risk categories, Chronic Neuropathy; Chronic diseases including Rheumatoid Arthritis; Vascular problems, Terminally ill patients and patients with Physically/Mental Health/Learning Difficulties
3. To be responsible for the assessment of new patients with subsequent development of individual care packages and provision of appropriate footcare education/advice
4. To be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of podiatric care to a variety of patients with a wide and high range of clinical needs including Biomechanical conditions, Diabetes, Vascular Problems, Wound management/tissue viability, Mental Health issues
5. Able to carry out a foot ulcer risk assessment and ulcer management, including the identification of vascular insufficiency, neurological deficit, significant foot deformity, trauma or increased foot pressures
6. Understand wound healing and potential complications and carry out sharp debridement, wound bed management and use of appropriate dressings; recognise signs of wound infection and manage accordingly; refer for advanced management when needed
7. To perform basic biomechanical examination, produce temporary insoles and refer appropriately
8. To perform comprehensive assessment of the diabetic/high-risk foot including full annual review with sensory and vascular analysis as required
9. To understand and refer appropriately for investigations (e.g., microbiology, radiology)
10. To use the decision-making process to identify when patients require the intervention of other professional and/or departmental specialist areas by following agreed departmental referral pathways
11. To participate/carry out nail surgery
12. To be actively involved in providing Foot Health Education to patients, relatives and carers
13. Care will be provided mainly in primary care settings, including community clinics, patients' homes, ward rounds, hospital settings and residential homes
14. To have the capability to move and handle immobile patients, often in confined spaces
15. To have highly developed physical skills and precision hand/eye coordination for debridement techniques of various wounds
16. To follow departmental policies, procedures and guidelines and make clinical decisions within professional boundaries
17. To undertake other work across the service as directed by Team Leaders
18. To be involved in supporting student/apprentice training and staff from other disciplines
19. To support Footcare Assistants and Band 5 staff
20. To be flexible and provide cover for other Podiatrists at short notice
21. To implement Trust values in the delivery of care to the Trust’s diverse population


Person Specification


Qualifications

* HCPC Podiatrist Registration
* Degree or Diploma in Podiatric Medicine
* Evidence of CPD Portfolio
* Certificate in local anaesthesia


Experience

* Experience in the NHS or similar sector
* Experience treating a varied caseload of podiatry patients, including those with high-risk conditions
* Experience working in both a team and independently managing a caseload with risk categorisation
* Experience of multi-disciplinary working, care in the community and domiciliary settings
* Clinical skills including vascular and neurological assessment
* Demonstrate clinical reasoning and decision-making in podiatric management including care planning and evaluation
* Ability to undertake nails surgery assessments, procedures and postoperative care
* Knowledge of health and safety at work


Skills and Knowledge

* Knowledge of the effect of diabetes in podiatric care
* Experience in wound care including treatment modalities and biomechanics
* Demonstrates current clinical knowledge regarding evidence base and best practices
* Ability and knowledge of appropriate investigations for high-risk foot
* Knowledge of national policy relating to the diabetic foot
