Overview
This is not your average catering job. It is a great chance to put your catering qualifications and skills into practice and make an impact far beyond the kitchen. As part of the prison's catering team, you'll be working in a professional industrial kitchen environment, with a good salary, pension and Civil Service benefits including apprenticeship opportunities "earn while you learn". Unlike traditional restaurant jobs, you won't have to work late into the evening. You'll oversee the work of offenders to prepare and cook quality, nutritional meals for the entire prison. You will play your part in helping them turn their lives around by supporting them to learn new skills and work towards gaining qualifications to increase their chances of employment and reduce their likelihood of reoffending when they leave prison.

Hours and salary
You will work a 37-hour week and shift patterns are in place which include hours outside of 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, weekends and public holidays. Refresher training in food safety (HACCP) should be completed at three year intervals.

Working arrangements & further information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is informal, non-contractual flexible working that blends working from base location, other MoJ sites, and/or home. Some roles may not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and are subject to regular review. For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location (which may include a Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office).
Some of MoJ's terms and conditions are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer to the new MoJ terms if already on modernised terms, or to unmodernised terms if on unmodernised terms. Details will be available if an offer is made. Standard full-time hours are 37 per week excluding unpaid breaks. HMPPS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing patterns where they meet role and business needs. All applications for these patterns will be considered in accordance with HMPPS' Flexible Working policy. If you are a current NPS employee, this vacancy may be available on a Loan basis for up to 2 years, subject to Business Unit approval.

Training and eligibility
* HMPPS provides training and development opportunities (equality and diversity, dealing with challenging behaviour, suicide prevention, anti-bullying, etc.).
* All staff receive security and diversity training and an induction program.
* Eligibility includes security and identity checks prior to appointment; external candidates face six months probation (internal candidates may be subject to probation if not previously served).
* All staff are required to declare membership in any group or organisation the HMPPS considers racist.
