Overview
Senior Band 6 Occupational Therapy position based in the Eastern Locality. The post is based within the multidisciplinary Physical and Sensory Pathway, with opportunities to work across other pathways within CFHD. The service is innovative, dedicated and offers development and CPD opportunities. You will be expected to have clinical supervisory skills and manage a complex and varied caseload across home, school and clinic settings.

Responsibilities
 * Hold responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a caseload within a designated geographical area, within your level of competence and capability.
 * Use a strengths-based approach; ensure clinical effectiveness through evidence-based interventions, goal-based, collaborative practice and Routine Outcome Measures.
 * Deliver specialist occupational therapy advice, assessment and interventions to children and young people to maximise their occupational performance across different settings.
 * Provide or recommend suitable adaptive equipment where this is a statutory provision and offer guidance for home or school adaptations.
 * Supervise and support Occupational Therapy Technicians and/or Integrated Therapy Assistants; mentor/clinically supervise newly qualified Occupational Therapists and Band 4/5 staff as required.
 * Participate in student placements and promote service user participation across the service.
 * Work across other geographical areas as required to support colleagues; participate in clinical audits and clinical research as appropriate.
 * Assess and intervene with specialised equipment and environmental adaptations as part of statutory work.
 * Contribute to an integrated, coordinated support model in Children and Family Health Devon, in partnership with children, young people and families.
Communication and working relationships
 * Communicate complex condition-related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and the multidisciplinary team in an accessible and understandable way.
 * Demonstrate empathy and ensure effective communication, especially where barriers exist or sensitive issues arise.
 * Form productive relationships with others under stress or facing challenging difficulties.
 * Promote multidisciplinary and interagency liaison and collaborative practice to a broad range of audiences; write reports accessible to lay and professional readers.
 * Contribute to clinical pathways and ensure a well-coordinated care plan; manage initial complaints sensitively and without escalation where possible.
Analytical and judgement
 * Demonstrate specialist Occupational Therapy knowledge across a range of therapeutic interventions.
 * Use knowledge to inform sound clinical judgement/decision making for case management.
 * Integrate evidence from diverse sources to make differential diagnoses of occupational performance; seek advice as appropriate.
 * Reflect on practice with peers and mentors, identifying strengths and development needs.
Planning and organisation
 * Organise and plan own caseload to meet service and patient priorities; readjust plans as situations change.
 * Supervise and coordinate Occupational Therapy Technicians daily; supervise Band 5 staff regularly.
Patient/Client care, treatment and therapy
 * Undertake clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner with professional accountability and clinical risk management.
 * Deliver care as part of a multidisciplinary team or as the sole professional with responsibility for a patient episode of care and onward referral as required.
 * Perform advanced therapeutic assessment of children with developmental problems, long-term conditions, or complex/severe disabilities; use advanced questioning and clinical reasoning to provide diagnoses and prognoses and to tailor treatment programs.
 * Use routine outcome measures and a goal-based approach with service users to inform care; work closely with clients, carers and families on decision-making.
 * Co-produce specialist care plans with children, young people and families; ensure care plans are understandable.
 * Provide 1:1/group therapy, parent/carer-based interventions and consultancy/mentoring across community settings; evaluate outcomes using evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
 * Ensure safeguarding and child protection considerations are followed, with safeguarding supervision as required.
Policy and service development
 * Deputise for the Clinical Team Manager or Specialist Occupational Therapist in their absence; oversee operation management of the team and allocation of work to meet priorities.
 * Provide opportunities for children and young people to express their views and influence service development.
 * Interpret and implement local and national guidelines, policies and procedures affecting children’s services; follow employers policies and professional standards.
Finance, equipment and resources
 * Adhere to financial policies and procedures; care for equipment entrusted to you; maintain a clear desk policy and protect confidential information.
 * Promote best-value practice and protect service resources; manage materials and maintain adequate supplies.
 * Ensure equipment is maintained to standard for patient and staff safety; maintain stock control and timely ordering of supplies; assess, order and set up specialist equipment for identified children and demonstrate maintenance to parents/staff as needed.
Human resources and development
 * Contribute to training opportunities and supervise Occupational Therapy Technicians and Integrated Therapy Assistants as needed.
 * Mentor newly qualified OTs; access clinical supervision regularly; oversee caseload management of newly qualified staff.
 * Tailor training to participants’ needs and participate in the appraisal process; address staff performance, sickness, attendance and disciplinary matters as required.
Information resources and administrative duties
 * Ensure accurate data entry and contemporaneous case notes; have a sound knowledge of IT and be computer literate.
 * Follow employer policies and complete statutory and mandatory training; identify and manage risks through incident reporting.
 * Participate in activities to improve service delivery and quality of care, such as staff surveys and service development.
Research and development
 * Participates in clinical audits and, where appropriate, clinical research.
Freedom to act
 * Operate as an autonomous professional; work within Royal College of Occupational Therapy and HCPC codes of practice and organisational policies.
