Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Lecturer in History of Art to join our dynamic, research-led art history team at the School of Historical Studies in Autumn 2026.

We are looking for an art historian specialising in the modern period (1800 onwards), with a track record of teaching and research. As Lecturer, you would contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in history of art and history of art with curating, develop your own research-led Option Modules at levels 6 and 7, and have the capability to set-up an undergraduate work-placement module, liaising with external partners.

This post is offered on a permanent contract at, full time 35 hours per week, with a salary of £44,247 rising to £60,858 per year. Teaching hours will vary from 6pm - 9pm, Monday to Friday.

Experience of working with cultural organisations would be welcome, and applicants with published research on questions related to race and legacies of colonialism, and their contemporary impact on the discipline would be especially welcome.

As Lecturer at Birkbeck, you would contribute to the research culture and profile of the as well as the subject area (Birkbeck’s History of Art was ranked 4th in the UK at the last REF).

This opportunity would build on your proven experience as a researcher with a publication record; as a lecturer, supervisor and mentor to students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds; as an effective administrator; and as a proactive team player.

Remuneration

£44,247 rising to £60,858 per annum. The salary is Grade LLEC on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
