Fuse Energy is at the forefront of the UK’s energy transition, developing innovative and sustainable energy solutions. As we expand our portfolio, we are looking for an experienced process engineering professional with expertise in technical safety to join our London-based team. This is a critical role as we scale our hydrogen R&D activities as well as construct and operate renewable energy generation sites.
Process Safety Strategy
* Manage and own the process safety strategy and operations across Fuse Energy’s UK business from concepts, design through to operations.
* Ensure Fuse Energy’s corporate policies and procedures are effectively implemented in the UK organization.
* Develop and drive programs in compliance with UK regulations and industry best practices.
* Project manage system design implementation with partners and vendors to enable successful hydrogen project delivery.
* Cultivate a strong safety culture and champion best practices across the organisation.
* Lead HAZOP/HAZID studies using industry-standard tools such as PHA-Pro or PHA Works, documenting action items and ensuring closure.
* Ensure design compliance with DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) and COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) where applicable.
* Provide input during Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and participate in design safety reviews (PFD, P&ID, HAZID, SIL/LOPA, QRA) stages.
Project & Operational Oversight
* Provide process safety leadership for Fuse Energy’s major projects and operational sites, namely large scale solar and hydrogen production facilities.
* Develop and own safety and engineering deliverables across the design lifecycle, ensuring the robust implementation of hazard identification, risk management, and system design activities.
* Work closely with the R&D team to ensure a safe working environment throughout our hydrogen lab-scale testing and scale-up, working to minimise hazard and risk.
* Conduct process engineering design activities, including engineering calculations and system development in a timely and cost-effective manner.
* Support hydrogen-specific risk management using ISO/TR 15916 guidelines for Basic considerations for the safety of hydrogen systems.
* Develop emergency response plans for hydrogen release, fires, and explosions in collaboration with local authorities.
Compliance & Training
* Ensure compliance with UK regulations and company policies, e.g. by implementing Inherently Safer Design (ISD) principles, managing hazardous areas for explosive atmospheres, control of hazardous substances, and ensuring HAZOP & HAZID readiness.
* Oversee safety auditing, risk assessments, and corrective actions to maintain the highest standards.
* Develop and implement safety workshops and training programs to enhance awareness and competency across teams.
* Maintain and audit safety files to meet HSE (Health and Safety Executive) reporting and record-keeping obligations.
* Lead internal safety incident investigations and participate in external regulatory audits.
* Develop control plans for electrolyzer testing rigs, including gas leak detection, purge protocols, pressure relief systems, and safe venting.
