Foundation Training Programme Director Psychiatry - West Midlands

NHS England is looking to appoint a Foundation Training Programme Director with responsibility for the overall management and oversight of education and training of Foundation Placements in Psychiatry Placements across the three West Midlands Foundation Schools (North, South and Central).

The Foundation Programme is responsible for approximately 1,300 trainees in the West Midlands. The post would be an ideal opportunity for an experienced Educational Supervisor aiming to develop their skills and further enhance their educational portfolio.

The post attracts 1.5 PA which will be reimbursed to the successful candidate's employing Trust at £10,000 (pro rata) and it is anticipated that some additional SPA time will be required. It is expected that Foundation Training Programme Directors continue in practice while fulfilling the role. The post will be offered until 31st March 2027.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work with the local lead educators to ensure that each psychiatry placement of the programme and the programme as a whole meet the Local NHS England standard for training and that each trainee is able to access a comprehensive range of experiences in psychiatry which will enable them to gain the capabilities necessary for full registration and completion of the foundation curriculum.

The post holder will ensure that Psychiatry Foundation Supervisors are appropriately trained, keep their training up to date and ensure the quality of placements. Further details can be found within the job description.

NHS England working across the West Midlands is responsible for the delivery of high quality postgraduate medical and dental education and training across the region. NHS England is committed to the development of a medical and dental workforce that will support high quality patient care.

About us

Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms – enabling us to design and deliver high‑quality NHS services.

We lead the NHS in England by:

* Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities
* Making the NHS a great place to work, where people can develop and make a difference
* Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
* Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation

Earlier this year, the Government announced that NHS England will gradually merge with the Department of Health and Social Care, to create a smaller, more strategic centre that reduces duplication and waste.

If successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in‑person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

Job responsibilities

You can find further details about the role, including key responsibilities and accountabilities, alongside the organisational structure and person specification in the attached Job Description and other supporting documents.

Please note: The post is offered on a contract for services basis and all candidates are reminded that if they are successful, they are responsible for securing written agreement from their Trust for release from clinical work for the specified number of PAs/sessions.
