We are looking for an experienced Principal Engineer, who specialises in control and automation, takes full ownership of their work and prides themselves on the quality of output. Role

Principal Control Systems Engineer. The role is suitable for electrical design engineers, control system engineers or automation engineers who can take a customer specification from enquiry through to a complete bill of materials and working diagrams for production and testing teams. The role technically leads the engineering team and provides experience-driven input and guidance, making decisions based on best practices, regulations, standards and customer preferences. It is a stable position within a key function, acting as the customer focal point from concept to completion. The role combines industrial electrical engineering, control system design and project management, suitable for an experienced engineer who enjoys variety and solving technical challenges.


Responsibilities (illustrative)

* Lead the engineering team and provide engineering input and guidance as required
* Take customer specifications from enquiry to BOM and production-ready diagrams
* Ensure outputs are technically and commercially robust and aligned with customer requirements
* Draft and draw engineering schematics, layouts, harnesses and related documentation
* Create and control engineering documentation, calculations, manuals, specifications and certifications
* Communicate and support wider teams for problem solving and projects
* Attend production meetings, provide commissioning assistance and remote site support
* Quality assure work via peer reviews and maintain project progression from start to finish
* Undertake site visits/inspections for projects or upgrades as required
* Prioritise engineering workload to meet deadlines and company requirements
* Keep knowledge up to date and contribute to continuous improvement

* Ensure outputs satisfy customer requirements and are delivered on time
* Interpret customer requirements, specifications, designs and drawings
* Create and issue quotes; liaise with customers as the point of contact for quotes and projects
* Coordinate with other engineers and link into production
* Responsible for safe low-voltage electrical designs and BOM management
* Draft/draw engineering diagrams (schematics, layouts, harnesses)
* Prepare engineering documentation, reports and certifications as required
* Support problem solving and projects with wider teams
* Participate in site visits, commissioning support and remote assistance
* Engage in peer reviews and drive quality
* Manage workload and sustain up-to-date knowledge
* Ensure works are completed with no loose-ends


Experience & Qualifications

* Experience leading an engineering team and working within an engineering team
* Minimum 10 years in industrial electrical control system design, including BOM management
* Minimum 5 years in industrial control panels, ideally heavy-industrial machinery
* Minimum 10 years with an electrical CAD package, drafting/drawing
* Minimum 10 years in a customer contact role
* Minimum 10 years producing quotes
* Able to specify components to meet a design
* Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams
* Experience creating technical and engineering documentation
* Machinery control system understanding and experience
* Ability to work with wiremen, commissioning engineers, site engineers, management and wider team
* IT literate with MS365 (Outlook, Word, Excel)
* Level 3 engineering or technical qualification or relevant experience
* Appropriate engineering/electrical experience and training (apprenticeship or equivalent)


Desirable/Advantageous

* Engineering Council registration as IEng or CEng
* PLC software experience (writing and/or commissioning)
* Functional Safety experience/qualification/registration
* Mechanical engineering understanding
* HNC/degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
