To work under the instruction/guidance of the SENDCo and classroom teachers, to provide specific work/care/support programmes. To enable access to learning for students and to assist the teacher in the management of students and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area.
Key Duties and responsibilities
Support for the Teacher
* Work within the classroom setting with SEND students to provide active support during teaching to ensure full participation and access to learning.
* Assist with the planning of learning activities and support students to achieve learning goals.
* Monitor the response of SEND students to learning activities and record achievements/progress as directed.
* Determining the need for and preparing and maintaining general and specialist equipment and resources and assisting students in their use.
* Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on student’s achievements, progress, problems etc.
* Promote good student behaviour, dealing with incidents in line with Academy Policy and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
* Provide feedback to students regarding work produced in line with Academy Policy.
Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers
* To be responsible for keeping and updating records as agreed with the teacher/ SENDCo, through the monitoring and evaluation of student’s responses to learning activities through observation of achievement against pre-determined learning objectives.
* Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programs, adjusting activities according to students’ responses/needs.
* Administer routine tests and invigilate exams, and accurately record achievement and progress.
Support for the Students
* Encouraging students to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all students in activities. Promoting independence and employing strategies to recognise and reward achievement.
* Supervise and provide particular support for all students, including those with SEND, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities.
* Assist with the development and implementation of individual Education plans as directed by the SENDCo.
* Establish positive professional relationships with students and interact with them according to individual needs.
* Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students.
* Encourage students to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
* Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem, independence and resilience.
Support for the Curriculum
* Work with students in 1-1 / small group settings to provide early acquisition support with a variety of existing resources and to support small group interventions as required (relevant training will be provided)
* Work with small groups in subject specific areas for afterschool homework/booster sessions across KS3 and KS4.
* Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop students’ competence and independence in its use.
* Prepare, maintain, and use equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activity and assess students in their use.
General Tasks
* Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to Child Protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality, and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
* Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the academy.
* Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.
* To assist in meeting the physical care needs of students as required.
Safeguarding
* The postholder must be aware of child protection issues and the need for confidentiality and to identify to the named child protection colleague in academy, concerns in respect of individual children.
Additional Duties
* Support extra-curricular activities and inclusion initiatives
* Undertake lunchtime duties as required
* Respect the customs, beliefs, and reasonable ambitions of all individuals
* Follow academy health and safety procedures and take responsibility for your own wellbeing
* Accept any other reasonable duties as directed by the Principal or Vice Principal
Quality Assurance:
* To adhere to and to help to implement Academy quality procedures
* To take part, as may be required, in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the Academy
Communications:
* To communicate effectively with the parents of students as appropriate
* To communicate and co-operate with persons or bodies outside the Academy, where appropriate.
* To follow agreed policies for communications in the Academy
* To attend meetings in accordance with the Academy policy
