Overview
This role is suitable for peri (ST8 equivalent) or post-CCT plastic surgeons. This role will be advertised as a 6-month post with the aim to recruit for August 2025 and February 2026 start. This is a high-volume breast microsurgery fellowship suitable for plastic surgeons towards the end of their training pathway, or those that have recently gained CCT and wish to enhance / refine their experience to the level required to gain a substantive NHS consultant post in this subspecialty.
About the Unit
There are 5 substantive Consultant Plastic Surgeons and 1 Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the unit, specialising in microsurgical breast reconstruction with approximately 200 free flap cases per year including DIEP and thigh flaps (TUGs, DUGs, PAPs), and bipedicled / stacked flaps. The majority of the Consultants are dual trained in breast oncology, and there is opportunity to gain skills in mastectomy and oncoplastic techniques if desired.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Duties include breast reconstruction theatre sessions, clinics and involvement in teaching and mentoring the specialty registrar grade.
* The fellow is expected to co-ordinate and participate in entering flap data into the UKNFR.
* Involvement in research and audit is expected.
* There is no on-call commitment with this post.
Context and Outcomes
This is one of the highest volume microsurgical breast units in the UK and at present we only have 1 Fellow in the team, meaning that fellows typically have a strong logbook upon completion. Former fellows have achieved substantive NHS Consultant appointments following completion of the fellowship.
