Job overview
The Ophthalmology Directorate is looking to appoint a full‑time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in VR for a 12‑month position at the earliest opportunity.
The successful candidate will join a team of 18 consultants providing specialist services in VR, Diabetes, Cornea, Medical & Surgical Retina, Ocular Motility, Oculoplastics and Uveitis.
Main duties of the job
Whilst the post will be primarily based at New Cross Hospital, the successful candidate will be required to carry out clinics and theatre sessions at Cannock Chase Hospital or Walsall Manor Hospital.
The department welcomes applications from candidates who are in possession of FRCOphth or equivalent or those who are on the GMC specialist register (or are eligible for registration within 6 months of the interview date with a certificate of completion of specialist training).
Working for our organisation
The department has two state‑of‑the‑art theatres based at New Cross Hospital and a bespoke, recently refurbished Cataract Theatre at the Cannock Chase Hospital site and is supported by Orthoptists, Hospital‑based Optometrists, a fully equipped imaging department and fields machines.
A walk‑in Emergency Service, led by Ophthalmic Nurse Specialists, is available within the Ophthalmology Emergency Department at the New Cross Hospital site and is supported by an Eye Referral Unit with booked appointments ‘hot‑clinics’ for urgent cases.
Duties and responsibilities
* Deliver high‑quality VR clinical care and surgical procedures in line with national standards.
* Conduct outpatient clinics, including diagnosis, treatment planning and follow‑up for patients with retinal, diabetic and related conditions.
* Manage theatre sessions, performing retinal and vitreoretinal interventions as required.
* Participate in audit and quality improvement projects, implementing changes based on audit results.
* Mentor and support junior staff, residents and allied health professionals within the department.
* Maintain accurate medical records and contribute to departmental activity within the electronic health record system.
Person specification
Registration and Qualifications
* Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.
* Higher Medical Degree.
* FRCOphth or equivalent.
Experience
* Specialist interest in Glaucoma, Diabetes, Cornea, Retinal Surgery, Ocular Motility, Oculoplastics or Uveitis.
* Evidence of audit participation and implementation of change following audit.
