Dexerto reaches millions of readers every month with fast, accessible coverage of internet culture, entertainment, and the stories driving conversation online. We’re expanding our coverage into mainstream sports news – focusing on stories that resonate beyond core fans and make sense to a broad, global audience. We’re looking for a freelance Trending Sports News Writer who can spot, pitch, and write those stories. What this role is (and isn’t) This role is about big sports moments that break out beyond the sport itself – stories that people are talking about whether they watched the event or not. You’ll be covering stories such as: Major sports figures making headlines on the pitch, court, or ring – and beyond Flashpoint moments, gaffes, or incidents that spark wider conversation Breakout athletes or results that capture attention far beyond regular fans Stories where sport intersects with celebrity, media, or online culture You won’t be writing: Match reports or play-by-play coverage Tactical or performance analysis Opinion columns Routine transfer or roster updates without wider relevance If a story only matters to hardcore fans, it’s probably not for us. What you’ll be doing Writing clear, engaging news stories for a mainstream, global audience Pitching timely, relevant ideas – and understanding what not to pitch Spotting stories early through social media, live events, and trend monitoring Explaining why a story matters, not just what happened Working with editorial and social teams to ensure stories reach a wide audience Working pattern Freelance role, including weekend availability We’re looking for a writer who is switched on to major global sports moments and can pitch confidently to editors Paid per article What we’re looking for Strong news judgement and an instinct for stories that travel Experience writing about sport, entertainment, or online culture Ability to write accessible, engaging copy Confidence to move quickly and decisively when a story breaks Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced news environment A clear understanding of US and global audiences How to apply Please send: Your CV A short cover letter outlining your experience and suitability for the role Links to relevant published work
