Project Overview
The UK Government is fully committed to an independent, continuous at‑sea nuclear deterrent, and through its 'triple lock pledge', to delivering the upgrades and programmes necessary to maintain and renew the country's defence nuclear capabilities. The scale and complexity of the work required is a critical National Endeavour and includes substantial investment in infrastructure development across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise. Bechtel are currently supporting AWEs complex Future Material Campus (FMC) project infrastructure programme, focusing on the required investment to renew AWE's manufacturing and storage capability for nuclear components and investing in new capabilities for nuclear material recovery. Our client is currently undergoing a period of significant investment in its production and associated infrastructure. This is made up of multiple nuclear and non‑nuclear facility new builds, legacy infrastructure upgrade and modifications, together with the related enabling works. The Future Materials Campus is AWE's flagship programme and is a part of a wider, multiyear multi‑billion‑pound portfolio of infrastructure investment that will support us in our overall purpose to protect the UK through nuclear science and technology and enable nuclear science for generations to come.
Job Summary
In this role, you will manage interdisciplinary teams to undertake 1) Project and technical reviews with the objective of better understanding the delivery status of in‑flight projects and where requested the identification of opportunities to manage and improve project and supply chain performance, 2) Management in the provision of suitably qualified and experienced (SQEP) in support of people, process and procedural improvements associated with the transition, and 3) Lead reviews with the objective of identifying areas where project schedule is challenged and identify credible improvements and/or remediation plans. Your recommendations for studies, lessons learned, project assessments, and new methods will optimize completion of project delivery activities.
The above activities will be required to span three systems delivery areas including PP&E, Facility Design and Construction:
* Process Plant and Equipment: Programme process plant and equipment which includes manufacturing, inspection, process plant and associated manufacturing layout and systems design, test, installation, and commissioning.
* Facility Design: Cross programme facility design including Civil, Structural and Architectural (CS&A) and Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) services design, manufacture, test and commissioning which includes all encompassing facility design and associated security, safety and control systems.
* Construction: Programme construction and fit out planning, control and delivery including that of the major nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities together with the associated demolition, site surveying and enabling works
Major Responsibilities
* Rapidly strengthen portfolio‑level delivery controls, governance, and assurance, creating a single “truth baseline” for cost, schedule, and risk across the programme.
* Enable and uplift Close critical skill gaps by pairing Consultant staff with major infrastructure programme experience with internal leads in key areas, and close critical skill gaps.
* Implement/enable a consistent way of working: shared WBS, phase‑gates, enablement of governance process, KPIs and dashboards, so that issues can be seen and managed consistently across the portfolio, Implement consistent KPIs and dashboards.
* Identify and execute scope, phasing, value‑engineering and contracting options that bring the portfolio back within the funding envelope while protecting agreed outcomes and benefits.
* Sustain capability: successfully handover to next phase of the Programme Delivery.
* Manages the successful completion of activities related to the delivery methodology assigned projects
* Assists in development of best practice standardised methodologies
* Oversees the review of standard plans and specifications
* Reviews and evaluates new methods and concepts
* Proactively engages with the Bechtel and Client teams to foster trusted relationships
* Establishes working relationships with GBU Functional teams
Education and Experience Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering (or international equivalent)
* 13‑15 years of relevant experience
* Degree qualified in an engineering‑based discipline
* Project Management Qualification
* Nuclear or energy sector experience would be of particular interest, though not essential
* Evidence of CDM training, accountability and implementation
* Strong background in civil / mechanical / process engineering, infrastructure or construction
Required Knowledge and Skills

* Strong interpersonal skills for stakeholder management
* Experience of operating within a collaborative working environment through positive and transparent behaviours
