The Blood Sciences Department at Wirral University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust currently has vacancies for Healthcare Science Support Workers (HSSW) - Band 2.
The role includes working as part of a team of other staff within the Blood Sciences Specimen Reception.
Main duties of the job
The role will involve working in a high‑pressured environment, taking receipt of large volumes of laboratory specimens. Tasks include checking and examining electronic and paper requests and transferring requests onto the Laboratory Information System in preparation for sample analysis.
You will be rostered into the Laboratory Department as part of a team of Band 2 staff, carrying out technical, clerical and administrative duties on both Wirral University Teaching Hospital sites – Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospital.
It is essential that you have the ability to work flexibly between the hours of 07:00 and 21:00, inclusive of Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday, on rotation.

Person Specification
Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training
* 5 GCSEs or equivalent
* IT literate with good keyboard skills
* Basic understanding of good laboratory practice and health and safety
* GCSE (or equivalent) at grade A‑C in English, Mathematics and a Science subject
* NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in a relevant subject
Knowledge and Skills
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
* Manual dexterity; ability to use laboratory equipment ranging from manual pipettes to automated analysers
* Experience in a modern Blood Sciences Laboratory, gained in the last 3 years
* Experience using a laboratory information management system
* Experience of using automated and semi‑automated laboratory analysers
Personal Attributes
* Ability to work under pressure
