Due to a promotion, we have an exciting opportunity for a band 6 paediatric audiologist to join our team. Band 5-6 development may be considered.

We are recruiting for 1 x 37.5hr permanent position and 2 x fixed term positions, full and part time hours available.

The fixed term positions are to provide cover for employees on maternity leave and will end April 2027 or when the substantive postholder returns. Whilst this post is advertised on an fixed term basis there is the potential that this post may become permanent in the future. NHS Employees should ideally secure their manager’s agreement for a secondment arrangement ideally prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made.

Main duties of the job

To be a member of a Multidisciplinary Team providing a comprehensive, integrated Paediatric Audiology service for babies, children and young adults.

As part of an audiology team, carry out daily clinical work, managing own clinics and individual workload.

Complete specialist work which includes comprehensive testing and diagnostic assessments of hearing, requiring in-depth knowledge of paediatric test protocols, and assessment techniques.

Conduct paediatric hearing aid fittings, programme aids using manufactures software and specific specialised hardware. Perform day to day management of hearing aids, and rehabilitee support.

Is responsible for the supervision of junior staff and training of undergraduate and post graduate students on audiology courses.

To contribute and be an active participant in audit, service development and change management of the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Work according to national and local guidelines, noting any deviation with justification in the child’s records.
2. Perform diagnostic assessment of the hearing of children and analyse the results
3. Perform pure tone audiometry, using air conduction and bone conduction
4. Test pre-school children via Distraction testing. Visual re-enforcement, audiometry (VRA), Performance testing, Manchester picture testing, Speech testing, testing of middle ear function using tympanometry, OAE's
5. Complete audiological testing of babies that are referred following their newborn hearing screen, using Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and Diagnostic ABR if area of speciality
6. Carry out Otoscopy following BSA recommended procedures. Be able to identify normal and abnormal ears. Identifies any contraindications for any further procedures e.g. tympanometry and impressions
7. To arrange and advise referral to other professionals for treatment / management when required e.g. referral to ENT nurse or GP for treatment of an infection
8. Take accurate and safe impressions of the ear following BSA recommended procedures for impression taking. Perform Otoscopy to identify any contra indications
9. To carry out ordering of ear moulds using Organisational ordering system in order to ensure moulds are available for next appointment
10. Carry out comprehensive repair sessions to hearing aids
11. Dispense, fit and maintain digital hearing aids, using MCHAS guidelines and protocols
12. Complete reviews of hearing aid use and fitting. Identifies the benefit of the hearing aid, satisfaction with the aid and use this information to adapt programs, settings and take further rehabilitation measures.
13. Carry out assessments on hearing aid users.
14. Perform Otoscopy to identify any abnormal ear conditions so that appropriate referrals for treatment can be made.
15. Fit and programme digital hearing aids.
16. Identify children with atypical of abnormal ear conditions and refer on.
17. Carry out routine maintenance and calibration checks on audiological equipment, reporting faults and arranging for repair when necessary.
18. Maintains accurate recording of results and updates patient records. Write reports to allied hearing professionals when required
19. Performs correct and valid use of diagnostic and assessment equipment and specialised audiological computer software. Updates national eSP database with results of hearing tests following referral from neonatal hearing screening team
20. Ensures adequate and smooth transition of children onto adult Audiology Services, via a Transition Clinic.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

21. Registered with AHCS or HCPC
22. BSc Audiology or equivalent e.g. BTEC in MPPM, BAAT Parts 1 and 2 and HNC MPPM

Experience

Essential criteria

23. At least 2 year’s Audiology experience to include at least 1 years’ experience in paediatric audiometric assessment including full range of behavioural audiometric tests
24. Advanced knowledge of working in a specialist paediatric audiology department
25. Good experience in paediatric diagnostic tests.
26. Experience of working in a modernised audiology service to include fitting and verification of digital hearing aids (MCHAS)

Skills

Essential criteria

27. Excellent experience of paediatric hearing aid assessment, fitting and rehabilitation.
28. To be able to carry out a full range of behavioural audiometric tests, pure tone audiometry, impedance and speech audiometry as required.
29. To recommend more complex assessments when necessary and perform these appropriately

Knowledge

Essential criteria

30. Demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance.
31. Evidence of knowledge of current trends within clinical speciality.
32. Good understanding of the issues surrounding hearing impairment and impact on life quality

33. Flexibility over location/ pattern of work
34. Able to travel Independently throughout the Trust
35. Ability to work flexibly according to the service needs with occasional Saturday / evening clinics
36. Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
