Location: 2 Bristol Avenue, Colindale, London, NW9 4EW Hours: Full‑time Start date: 20 April 2026 Salary: £56,376 per annum About the Client Barnet Council’s Environment Directorate delivers a wide range of essential services across Highways and Transportation. The Highways Development Control function plays a critical role in shaping sustainable growth, ensuring that development proposals meet statutory requirements, protect the public highway, and support the borough’s long‑term transport strategy. The Role Working within the Development Control Team, the Senior Highways Development Control Engineer will support the Highways Development Control Manager in the delivery of all highways and development control activities. This includes acting as a statutory consultee for planning applications with transport impacts, providing pre‑application advice, assessing construction management plans and travel plans, and overseeing highway works through to adoption. The post holder will also contribute to the growth of the service by identifying and securing sustainable third‑party income through an integrated “One Stop Shop” highways development approach. You will deputise for the Highways Development Control Manager, supporting stakeholder relationship management, policy development, and the achievement of income and service targets. This is a hybrid role, with attendance required at the Colindale offices. Key Responsibilities Act as statutory consultee for planning applications with transport or highways implications Provide pre‑application advice and assess construction management plans, travel plans and associated documentation Authorise, monitor and manage highway works, including legal agreements and adoption processes Support the Highways Development Control Manager in service delivery, policy development and stakeholder engagement Contribute to the identification and securing of sustainable third‑party income Deputise for the Highways Development Control Manager as required Maintain strong working relationships with Planning Services and external partners Deliver excellent customer service and ensure effective communication with residents, developers and stakeholders Candidate Requirements Strong technical background in highways development control, transport planning or related discipline Experience acting as consultee on planning applications and assessing development‑related highway impacts Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and statutory processes Ability to manage complex caseloads and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders Strong communication, negotiation and customer‑facing skills Ability to support service growth and contribute to income‑generating activities Experience deputising or supporting senior management is desirable Ability to work effectively within a hybrid working arrangement
