Job overview

University Hospitals Sussex is looking for a skilled and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join the Clozapine supply service within Worthing Hospital Pharmacy. As a service, they will be contributing to the safe and efficient supply of Clozapine to over 850 patients across 2 counties, working closely with other Healthcare professionals to ensure patients needs are met.


Main duties of the job

* To delegate the daily dispensing requirements to Pharmacy assistant or technician, and Final Check dispensed Clozapine ready for dispatch to patients
* Put together Yumizen NPT Clinic boxes in advance of patients attending for their blood tests and collection of medication
* Responding to email and telephone queries in a timely and appropriate manner
* Work closely with the Senior Pharmacy technician for the service, and provide cover for leave and sickness where required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assist with the service provision to clozapine patients registered at Worthing Pharmacy, delegating responsibilities to the Pharmacy Technician for Mental Health where appropriate.

* To follow the direction of the Senior Pharmacy Technician – Clozapine Co-Ordinator regarding workflow priorities and service delivery.
* To liaise closely with the Senior Pharmacy Technician – Clozapine Co-Ordinator regarding dispensing for mental health medicine management units.
* To dispense inpatient, outpatient and TTA prescriptions in accordance with departmental guidelines.
* To assist in the delivery of the medicines management agenda, particularly “one stop” dispensing scheme to all units/wards.
* To act as an accredited checking technician for the pharmacy department, as required (minimum of 3 hours per week in order to retain the accreditation).
* To liaise with ward managers, other pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants within the team regarding appropriateness of the stock list content, and all aspects of the topping up service. To review and update the content of all stock lists with ward managers, a minimum of twice yearly. To assist in the training / supervision of pharmacy assistants delivering the topping up service, as required.
* To assist, when required, in the assembly of orders for stock items for the various wards and departments of the trusts, in accordance with departmental guidelines.
* To assist, when required, in the ‘top-up’ of wards and departments in accordance with departmental guidelines.
* To assist in the management and dispensing of clozapine in accordance with departmental guidelines. To dispense inpatient, outpatient, TTA and clozapine prescriptions in accordance with departmental guidelines.
* To ensure goods are stored under the appropriate conditions and stocks are rotated.
* To evaluate returned pharmaceuticals from wards and departments for suitability to re-issue in line with departmental guidelines.
* To be responsible for tidiness of workplace areas.
* To ensure that adequate levels of consumable items used in the course of dispensing are available and to ‘top-up’ these items as necessary.
* To respond appropriately to incoming telephone calls, patients, customers, visitors and other hospital staff attending the pharmacy.
* To develop and participate in audits and surveys to measure the quality and effectiveness of the pharmacy services provided to clozapine service.
* To participate in project work allocated by the Senior Pharmacy Technician – Clozapine Co-Ordinator and when necessary, those from the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust pharmacy forum meetings.
* To participate in the development and implementation of all relevant University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust guidelines in relation to this service.


Person specification


Qualifications and experience

* NVQ level 3 Pharmacy Services, BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent and be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* Previous experience working in a Hospital Pharmacy environment
* Previous experience working within Mental Health
