Senior Advisor Contaminated Land and Minewaters - 31670
We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join the national Land & Contamination Management team as a Senior Advisor to lead project work tackling the historic legacy of land contamination and water pollution from abandoned mines.
Overview
You will lead the Environment Agency’s work on the Contaminated Land and Water and Abandoned Metal Mines Programmes, support remediation and policy delivery, and collaborate with Defra and other government bodies on cross-cutting issues related to legacy contamination and water pollution from historical mining.
Responsibilities
* Act as the Environment Agency’s Programme Executive for the Contaminated Land and Water and Abandoned Metal Mines Programmes.
* Support and deliver on contentious issues arising from legacy contamination, contributing to Government growth ambitions and Environmental Improvement Plan commitments.
* Build positive relationships with Defra, other departments, stakeholders, and partners; lead national engagement with the Mining Remediation Authority on water pollution and heat recovery from abandoned coal mines.
* Apply technical expertise across the land contamination portfolio, including remediation via voluntary measures or spatial planning, reviewing environmental permits for contaminated soils and groundwater treatment, regulating Part 2A Special Sites, and preparing and publishing State of Contaminated Land reports.
* Lead and manage a small team of direct reports in this technical field.
Experience / Skills Required
* Technical expertise in tackling legacy contamination from land contamination and/or pollution from abandoned mines (preferably both) and ability to manage risks and challenges.
* Operational knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance; thorough understanding of the Contaminated Land Regime under Part 2A EPA 1990 is desirable.
* Project and programme management experience including investigation/remediation of contaminated land or mine-water pollution, delivering results to time, cost and quality.
* Experience of leading and managing high-performing teams.
* Experience of informing and influencing government departments or stakeholders on contentious or complex topics.
Technical requirements
* Degree qualification in a relevant discipline (Essential).
* Chartered or working towards chartership (Desirable).
Location and Working Arrangements
You’ll have an EA Office base location; the role is national, and working location is flexible/hybrid. Some travel and overnight stays may be required.
