RWE develops and constructs renewable energy projects around the world, and owns and operates offshore wind farm projects throughout Europe representing a total of 2.4 GW. RWE is therefore uniquely positioned to advance the energy transition, as well as to play a leading role in the sector at an international level.
Due to increasing workload, we are now seeking a Grid Integration and System Studies Engineer to assist us in progressing our offshore wind projects towards construction. The role will be based in Swindon, Coventry or London or any UK Offshore Site Office, although, as the projects progress, there may also be some work required at contractor locations as business/project needs dictate and some travel will be required with the role, both nationally and internationally.
About the role
The Engineer will sit in RWE Renewables’ Offshore Wind Engineering Department, specifically the Electrical System & Project Engineering Region 2 team. The role will support the Project’s Engineering and Package Managers with responsibilities including:
1. Working in construction or development phases of our offshore wind farm projects, the Engineer will be responsible for ensuring a robust and optimised through life design of the project’s electrical system supporting on all aspects of the generation and transmission system up to the grid interface point
2. Advise projects on specific questions regarding electrical system behaviour, grid code compliance and grid connection processes
3. Act as project's grid integration and system studies technical specialist for discussions with OEM’s and EPC contractors providing HVAC or HVDC offshore transmission solutions
4. Manage and coordinate grid connection processes, organizing all relevant technical documentation, test reports, and certifications
5. Oversee design/ prequalification for packages of offshore wind farms and components performing audits and technical due diligence
6. Create simulation models for electrical systems, and perform load flow and short circuit calculations, analyse dynamic stability and harmonics stability as well as protection concepts
7. Plan and coordinate internal and external resources for technical due diligence projects (e.g. of M&A acquisitions), analyse simulation results, technical solutions and risks, make proposals for technical and commercial decisions
8. Analyse electrical system behaviour and grid code compliance for projects and existing plants
9. Close liaison with technical experts in Offshore Engineering's EC&I Department and the Grid Integration & Studies Engineers working on similar projects to ensure their knowledge is effectively utilised on the project
Job requirements and experience
10. University degree or comparable education ideally in electrical power engineering
11. Fluent English speaking and writing
12. Experience in system studies of offshore wind or similar large HV transmission projects
13. Experience of the grid connection process and Grid Code in the UK, ideally dealing with both NESO and NGET
14. Comprehensive knowledge of the application of relevant software programs such as MS Office, DigSilent PowerFactory and PSCAD (for load flow, short circuit, protection, RMS and EMT simulations)
15. Knowledge of electrical plant including large power transformers, switchgear, onshore transmission substations, converter systems, static and dynamic reactive power compensation solutions, HV/MV cable systems
16. Appreciation of The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) roles and responsibilities
17. Solid communication and coordination skills; highly motivated and resourceful
18. Broad knowledge of the use of relevant guidelines, norms and standards and best practice
Advantageous, but not essential
19. Chartership in an Engineering discipline and membership of recognised professional body
20. Renewable energy/offshore wind farm experience
21. Demonstrable experience of working effectively in an international business
22. Valid driving licence
