Locum Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Applications are invited to join our friendly and supportive team at James Paget University Hospital as a Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The post is initially offered on a 12 month basis.

There are around 1,700 births each year at James Paget.

The Consultant team has recently been expanded and we are recruiting into these additional posts to support the development of the service. This will increase the Consultant team from 14 to 16.

The additional posts will provide the additional capacity to support the sustainable delivery of Gynaecology activity within National Waiting Time Milestones, which will include some elective work at weekends, whilst also ensuring we have appropriate cover for the management of women and pregnant people within our catchment who require Consultant-led Obstetric care.

Applicants will be required to undertake a full Obstetric and Gynaecology commitment. We are looking for an individual with good Obstetric skills who can commit to the provision of high-quality Obstetric care. We would welcome an individual with the drive and ambition who will continue to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to support the further development of the service, particularly applicants who would be willing to undertake one of the leadership roles in Obstetrics.

Main duties of the job

1. Share the Obstetric and Gynaecology workload with Consultant colleagues, including out-of-hours responsibilities with a Consultant on‑call rota.
2. Out‑of‑hours responsibilities, including participation in the Consultant on‑call rota.
3. Hold a lead role within an area of Obstetrics in line with clinical governance requirements within the department.
4. Undertake Gynaecology in an area of special interest to the candidate, if desired and that fits within the department.
5. Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
6. Give a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust.
7. Liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in the regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities of the hospital.
8. Take part in the Royal College of Obstetrician & Gynaecologists Continuing Professional Development. The Trust will provide study leave expenses in line with national terms and conditions of service.
9. Play a full part in the teaching and audit activities of the department.
10. Participate in the Trust’s appraisal process and attend mandatory training.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

• MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
• MRCOG or equivalent
• Hold a certificate or being within 6 months of completion of training or being on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.
• Full GMC Registration
• MD/PhD

Experience & Knowledge

• Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty of General Obstetric and Gynaecology
• Ability to exhibit leadership and management skills and participate in developments within the division
• Willingness to participate in and lead a multi-disciplinary team, balancing department and personal objectives
• RCOG Advanced Labour ward practice ATSM or equivalent
• Ability to manage obstetrics and emergency Gynaecology independently
• Experience in High Risk Pregnancy
• Experience of committee work/project management
• Experience in leading preterm prevention one stop clinic
• Experience in conducting service development projects in Obstetrics
• Experience in leading multidisciplinary management of mental disorders in pregnancy.
• Participate in the TOP service
• Advanced laparoscopic surgical skills
• Experience in office Gynaecology including out‑patient hysteroscopy

Academic Achievements

• Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
• Familiarity with conducting clinical audit
• Knowledge of using evidence base medicine to support decision making
• Involvement in research projects and published papers
