Overview
The Environment Agency has a broad remit to protect and enhance the environment, with a goal to create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife. Water is central to drinking, washing, recreation, industry and health, and a sustainable water supply is essential for our environment and economy. Water companies must invest billions over the next five years to protect the environment from pollution, and this role helps advise water companies on their plans and hold them to account for protecting the water environment.
What you will do
* Work alongside Water Quality Officers to establish Bathing Waters work in our teams and support the Operational community of practice to fulfil responsibilities.
* Assess Water Company proposals to meet bathing water standards and develop innovative methods to achieve these goals.
* Collaborate with Environment Agency teams (e.g., Local Area Integrated Environmental Planning and National Water Quality Guidance Teams) and engage with water companies and external stakeholders to achieve Bathing Waters outcomes.
* Respond to incidents as part of an incident role; be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. Training is provided and may attract an additional payment.
* Be part of the dispersed Operations Catchment Services team focused on securing outcomes across key stakeholders and influencing investment in the water environment.
Team and location
We are a dispersed team that meets face to face when needed. Location flexibility is supported, with training and mentoring provided. You will travel for national meetings and occasional overnight stays.
Essential
* Knowledge of water quality planning, bathing water regulations, understanding of the water industry and price review processes. Excellent communication and networking skills to work with Environment Agency colleagues and external stakeholders.
* Ability to analyse technical information.
* Experience presenting technical information to a wide audience.
* Organisational skills to plan, track, deliver and evaluate work to relevant standards and timescales.
* Work experience in an environmental discipline (e.g., water companies, environmental consultancies, regulatory roles, research/education, environmental charities).
Desirable
* Degree or postgraduate qualification in an environmental discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Ecology, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Data science and analytics).
* Experience in water quality modelling.
