Employed by London Borough of Camden, the Outreach & Engagement Officer will be based in North London Waste Authority (NLWA), serving Camden and six other north London boroughs that make up its membership.
About the role
Want to work with local communities, influence environmentally friendly behaviour and have a say in designing meaningful projects? As NLWA's Outreach and Engagement Officer, you'll work across innovative projects that have people and behaviour change at their core.
Within the role, you will plan and deliver community level engagement projects involving workshops, activities, and events. The engagement will relate to NLWA's waste prevention campaigns, and the constituent north London boroughs' outreach aims as part of the North London Joint Waste Strategy. This work has the aim of raising awareness of how to reduce waste, increase reuse, repair and recycling and promote services available to residents. You will provide information and activities to the public via face-to-face engagement with audiences that have varying degrees of knowledge and understanding of waste related issues.
Through this role you will work across a range of waste prevention topics for example food waste reduction through community challenges and stimulating waste prevention behaviours through nature-based sessions. This role will also play a significant part in delivering our annual North London Community Fund with not-for-profit organisations. You will brief and oversee work delivered by contractors or other project partners. You will also support with the monitoring and evaluation of project activities. Therefore, time management, organisation and punctuality are all key attributes of the post holder. This will be an exciting opportunity to build experience in scoping, developing and planning new initiatives that help to cut waste in north London.
The role will be a mixture of desk-based and face-to-face work. All staff are expected to be flexible in undertaking the duties and responsibilities attached to their post and may be asked to perform other duties.
About You
Are you passionate about sustainability and motivated by working with local communities? Do you enjoy engaging with people in a variety of different settings? Are you a strong communicator? As Outreach and Engagement Officer you will be an approachable, confident person who has experience working in public settings and interacting with members of the public.
We are seeking individuals with an adaptable nature, who can show initiative working in a range of settings and be proactive in their approach to delivering their work. You don't shy away from the challenge of influencing people to engage in pro-environmental behaviours. Self-motivated and enthusiastic individuals will thrive in this role.
You will be able to plan your workload and identify priorities, confidently engage with stakeholders, be punctual in your attendance and responses to correspondence, and have practical experience of MS Office.
A UK driving licence is desirable for this role but not essential.

About North London Waste Authority (NLWA)
Our mission is to preserve resources and the environment for future generations by exemplary planning, innovation, and communication in managing north London's waste.
We serve two million residents in seven boroughs and run communications and engagement campaigns to help them reduce their rubbish and recycle more. We campaign for government and industry action to reduce unnecessary single-use items, encourage reuse and repair and promote effective recycling.
To helptackle the climate emergencyandtoprevent rubbish going to landfill, we are building the greenest Energy Recovery Facility in the country and modern recycling facilities at the Edmonton EcoPark, through the North London Heat and Power Project.
Working for NLWA
The post-holder will work for NLWA and be based at NLWA's office in Tottenham Hale but be employed by London Borough of Camden through whom NLWA staff are employed. The North London Heat and Power Project is located at Edmonton EcoPark.
The NLWA office this role is based is in Tottenham Hale; 2 minutes from the Tube station with great service and amenity links close by. There is opportunity for flexible and remote working, however this position will require essential travel to variety of locations across the seven north London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, and Waltham Forest. The postholder will work at indoor and outdoor locations, which may have uneven terrain such as in parks.
Hours of work may exceed office working hours (i.e. start time before 9am and finish time after 5pm) and there will be a requirement to attend a variety of venues with occasional evening and weekend meetings and NLWA events, including community/stakeholder events. Time off in lieu or additional hours worked is agreed in advance with the line manager.
