Medical Secretary - Emergency General Surgery

Responsibilities
* Provide a comprehensive service to consultants and specialty teams with minimal supervision.
* Organise personal workload and coordinate with other Medical Secretaries to ensure efficient service.
* Exercise initiative and maintain confidentiality at all times.
* Ensure cross‑cover working where possible.
* Manage and maintain 18‑week patient pathways, including tertiary referrals, and record accurately in the PAS system.
* Arrange follow‑up appointments in conjunction with the Referral to Treat (RTT) pathway.
* Support consultants with non‑clinical tasks: preparing presentation documents, arranging meetings, circulating agendas and supportive materials, and taking minutes.
* Inform appropriate personnel of consultant annual and study leave, and junior doctor leave as needed.
* Organise and maintain consultant admissions; cancel/add patients to the waiting list as appropriate and contact patients.
* Liaise with the anaesthetic department and ward teams.
* Complete and amend theatre lists.
* Book critical care beds and manage admissions from home.
* Type dictation from audio transcription of clinical correspondence and documentation.
* Maintain an effective track of inpatient referrals to ensure timely review.
* Review clinical letters to ensure appropriate follow‑up arrangements or investigations are in place, rectifying as necessary.
* Allocate and check the work of other staff.
Qualifications
* Proficiency with audio‑typing and word‑processing packages, holding a qualification of at least RSA Level 3/OCR typing/word‑processing or equivalent.
* Knowledge of medical terminology.
* Desirable: possession of the AMSPAR certificate.
* Good interpersonal skills, friendly telephone manner, and pleasant disposition.
